My Cold Air Intake Rework

I decided to do some slice and dice. I measured it out and could raise the stock filter lid 3/4 inch. I also going to "ram air" the intake with a 4" system. It's been a mess but with the new engine I could literally hear it starving for air.

Re: My Cold Air Intake Rework

I've always liked that idea. I was following another member's progress a few years.

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tpi/...pi-camaro.html

The only issue I saw with that approach is that the OEM sized filters are still somewhat undersized.
Testing I've read about states that 1 sq. in. of filter area is required for every 6-7 HP. One filter element is about 5.5" square (filter media only IIRC) with the combined panels equaling 60 sq. in. Based on that we're limited to an unrestricted filtering capacity of 420 HP.
Of course many have pushed more power than that through less but there is a limit.

The only issue I saw with that approach is that the filters are still undersized for anything north of 400 HP. At least that's the spec that's listed at K&N.
K&N is wrong, IMO. Look at what the new cars have. Single bolt on filter. This will have 50 sq/in of area inlet. Rule is 146cfm per inch.

I was editing as you were replying.
I hadn't come across the 146 CFM guideline before. That's an enormous amount. (146 x 50!) Something I'll take into consideration if the cowl induction doesn't pan out.

Re: My Cold Air Intake Rework

If you can, use silicone for the flex joint at the throttle body, the convoluted factory flex joints don't do anything to reduce air turbulence, although this would not be significant at other places in the system, it is right at the entry to the TB.

I wouldn't accept that value if it wasn't a cylinder head airflow specialist posting it. Food for thought there Mr Speier.

Put it on the bench.

Before: 718@28" (Only get 10 and converted)

Now: 1155@28" (Only get 8 and converted).

Cleaned up and now a skim coat to make pretty..

Re: My Cold Air Intake Rework

This fit under the factory hood? I’ve thought about doing something like this but was waiting until I had my hood back on the car so I could look at clearance

what filler is that?

Are you able to run that test with the filters installed?

Well, at 146 CFM per sq. in., that would make sense.

Re: My Cold Air Intake Rework

That’s awesome man. I really wish I had a complete tpi air intake. I’m missing the bottom part that actually holds the filters. At this point it’s cheaper to put together a “cai” than buy that piece though.

Not putting you down, but wouldn't it be better to run that "ram air" setup like Hawks sells over those convoluted tubes, especially since you haven't closed off the sides of the inlet area? Or are you only looking for a solid path for cold air?

What Hawks sells is nowhere close to a "ram air" it's big ole slow box.

Closed off what sides? Lost me there.

On the sides of the grille opening where the convoluted tubes are, you can see the radiator. I guess by your replies you're only looking for cold air not not "ram air"

That would be ram air. It's 4" pipe raming the air into the lid.

Cold air would be hanging one of those ugly tubes off the TB and pointing it towards the ground with a filter on the end.

The "house" ducts fill the grille area of the IROC. It looks sort of DIY but I can see how it would yield results.
In the OP's case, it looks to be a pair of ducts from the Speedway Motors catalog. The kind of thing that makes it's way on to the circle track cars. I'm guessing, but I'd say that's a 90° inlet fitting in the grill and then up (through the corrugated tubing) to the filter housing. Very effective. And it doesn't look like it came from Home Depot.
EDIT: I see it's not a 90 fitting as the pipe attaches directly to back of the "frame". But the result is the same. Ram air. Fresh air.

Re: My Cold Air Intake Rework

Indeed it is ram air when it develops pressure at the filter box area at speed. If the duct is sealed to the filter box it will get air pressure

looks like it will work great. Would be nice to see the power difference tho, before and after

All due respect i am a numbers guy. I trust Chad tho, but i just like to see quantifiable data. Also wanted to see actual drivetrain loss from engine dyno to chassis dyno lol always been my curiousity

Re: My Cold Air Intake Rework

That was a little tongue in cheek there Mr Orr. If you know anything about me it's my pursuit of quantifiable data. I'm a numbers guy too. I'd prefer a little more hands on at the moment but that'll have to wait.
Still, what Chad has built is something I've considered pursuing for a while. That or cowl induction.

I need to get the tuner online before I go through the gears.

I agree with Orr, wouldn't that be something if it was creating a little boost!

I can't drive it due to weather but looking over old logs before the rework, it was showing 87 kPa at WOT. Which means I had lots of work to do.

Re: My Cold Air Intake Rework

I'm not 100% sure here. I'm at altitude. When I turn my key on, I'm reading 93 kPa, not started.

Would I ever show 101 kPa at altitude?

I'm at 3000 feet altitude and the barometric pressure at the moment is 102.1 kpa.

You can look up historical min & max barometric pressure for your area.

I've done enough racing with gauges to know it can't ever be 101. We are not sea level.
