Re: Rear Fender Wells

That part will flex well enough for 305s. You should have no issues w 275s and bending that a little.

I understand, this was extreme on many levels. The question was “what have others done to gain tire clearance”.

For 275s you're not gonna need to get that crazy with bending/cutting the metal. When initially did my car for 275s years ago I used a rubber mallet and gently shaped them. There were no marks from a hammer. I was just slightly more aggressive for the 305s. Part of it is offset also. At the same time, you can cut and go all out. You'll never need to worry about clearance again!

The car is going on a 7 project and all the interior is out of the car so if i am there I might as well clearance it for a 295 or even a 305 plus.

Re: Rear Fender Wells

That area can be hammered back for clearance, not uncommon to be done to fit wider tires. I had 295/35/18’ with 6.42” of backspacing and they fit fine with just some mild hammering, no mini tub or anything like that.

what’s are the specs of the wheels you are running?

I will be going out into my garage today and put a load on the rear suspension to double check what may need clearanced. As far as spec I will measure that also. I do know they are 15x8 convo pros but not 100% on backspacing. I will measure that since both back wheels are off the car.

They are 15x8 Convo Pros with a 5.5 back spacing. I just put the jackstand under the rear axle to see how the car sits under a load. I just installed the Borg Warner 9 bolt that i built 2 years ago lol

Re: Rear Fender Wells

I know this post is a few months old, but I recently ran into a similar issue with my car trying to fit 28x12.50 ET Streets.

I did the following:

Contact with the front edge.

I took a small pie cut out of the inner structure then rolled the fender well in & rewelded it.

This gave a lot more clearance.

From the fender well you cannot tell it was modified unless you know what to look for.

Re: Rear Fender Wells

I run a 325. I had to do a couple small cutouts and shave off the raised stiffeners on the subframes. The first picture is the inside of the car, on the passenger side. The second is driver side. I have almost 1/2 inch static clearance and it will still rub in a 1g turn. I need to sit a slightly deeper opening before our next trip to Tail of the Dragon

Re: Rear Fender Wells

A little update. I tried hitting it with my purse with no success. So out came the old grinder with cut off wheel. passanger side is pretty much done other than some rust in the spare tire area. Next is driver side.

All of the factory bracing for the arm rest has been modified and fits along with the seat bracket.
