what can cause knocking?
I have a strange problem, I have an lg4 non-cc carb and dizzy. When I step on the gas in 4th or 5th gear even though the rpms arn't increaseing it starts maing a knocking sound. I thought that somehow the springs in the dizzy where to light so I put a heavy one and a medium one and set it to 6 degrees initial advance and plugged the vacuum advance and it didn't seem to help any. What other possibilities could make it do this. 1st and 2nd gear I can go fulll throttle and no knocking but sometimes it makes a popping sound out of the exhaust. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks

Bad engine timing (incorrect advance springs), over heating and carbon depsosits are also contributors to ping/knock.

I used to use fuel treatment from pep boys. No brand really helped better than any other, but it did help. I think the STP stuff goes on sale alot. You might try it.
I'm gonna tell you, Firebreed, that your 2.8 probably has SERIOUS carbon deposits on your valves, chambers and pistons. Those engines with those carbs are very prone to that. You might get lucky and "treat" it away, but you'll see some of it when you tear it apart eventually, anyway.

But Mostly its becuase of the carbon build up. Or just need some oil.

sounds like too much advance in your timing and with "cheap" gas that would cause even more detonation. Better retard your timing a bit before your pistons become a puddle in the oil pan.

the timing is the even lower then the stock timeing if i retard it anymore the car wont start
and if i advance it any farther ill ping like heck
and if i advance it any farther ill ping like heck Yea I am having the same problem.. Kinda. My 1987 Camaro is a 2.8 fuel injected and I was driving it on the highway one day and it started with a low ping sound and then consistently got louder until it pretty much wouldn't go above 20mph and was knocking like hell! I am thinking carbon deposits maybe because I just bought the car and it wasen't driven alot before I got it and the gas was low... But if your problem is like mine I put a whole load of cleaner for it and it hasen't done a thing
I just don't know??

It's best to give it a tune up. Replace everything in the ignition and fuel system that's required. I prefer to use tested and true GM Delco products (parts and fluids) whenever possible. Ensure the timing is set at the optimal setting. I have my fuel, oil, and cooling system flushed and cleaned with quality products and professional systems on a regular basis. This will ensure your vehicle is running at a peak level.
