1LE / AC Delete / Smog Delete Pulley info
OK, I myself have searched for part numbers more times than I can count, and I've helped others with the same thing twice as often. I figure it's time for an all inclusive thread that's got sticky written all over it.
Obviously, the AC delete pulley is more common. Without some sort of custom set-up, the belt tensioner/pulley is required, and therefore we need the AC delete pulley. It's also refered to as the 1LE pulley, since 1LE cars came without AC to begin with.
The A.I.R. / Smog pump delete is also a fairly common mod for us Thirdgenners, however the use of the "Delete" pulley is rarely used. For this mod you have 2 other options:
-First, you can dis-assemble the pump itself, hog it out, and re-use simply for the pulley. It saves a good bit of weight (if thats' important to you), and it won't ever seize up on you.
-Second, you can buy a new serpentine belt (shorter?Longer?), and run all the way from the crank pulley to the AC pulley. Throwing a belt can be an issue at high RPMs, however most the guys doing this seem to have no problems.
-In my opinion, a big ole useless smog pump looks pretty ugly, and so does a BIG empty hole in the accessory bracket where the big ole smog pump used to go!!!!!
...without further adeiu....

A.I.R. / Smog pump Delete pulley

...and for whatever reason, both pulleys are listed as water pump pulleys. Go figure. Point is that you need the part number.
Here are some pics for ya!

GMPartsDirect promotes a serpentine belt conversion kit that does not include the aforementioned AIR delete pulley. The bracket included in this kit has a smaller pulley with no grooves. It's obviously intended to run on the back of the belt like the water pump. (Don't ask how I found this out...) This would fubar the belt routing and make getting the right size belt a chore.
And thanks for the photo credit.

So can i buy these two brackets and rip out my a/c and smog pump and use the exact same belt that I have on my L98 right now?? Or is mr grabwell right by saying that the one bellt has no groves and will screw up the way the belt is supposed to run???

These two parts listed in the pics CAN be used with the original belt, and will route the belt exactly the same. That's what I'm running. I'll post a pic of mine.
Clutch is talking about another pulley that has NO grooves. It is a smog pump replacement and the belt goes to the inside rather than the outside. I think if I'm not mistaken, it's part of a kit, not a stand alone pulley.

I have been running without a/c or the smog pump for about a year and a half without the use of any delete pulleys. The belt goes from the alternator around the tensioner to the water pump. The only thing about this is the groves rest on the flat part of the tensioner. The same belt has lasted 1.5 years though and I can't really tell that the groves have flattened out any. My car shifts around 6k with no problems. The belt is 66" long. I used to have a picture but lost it.

Yeah, still have the brackets but I thought about cutting away the parts that I don't need. I will try and get another picture of the belt.

I just went to Auto zone with a request for a 66" belt. I made sure the belt had enough grooves. It was kinda funny trying to explain why I couldn't just tell the guy what kind of belt I needed. He was so dependant on that computer. He kept saying, "well a 66" belt won't fit your car".

Car: too many ...
This thread is great! Thanks for the info guys!! This one belongs in the FAQ boards!! hehehe. I have one project that will have no A/C or smog (track car) so you guys just saved me a bunch of headaches!! I couldnt find the P/N's from GM and the Ebay delete pulleys are insane expensive. Thanks!!
I do have one more question though, to iroczrockz. What was the final Autozone part number for the 66" belt with the correct number of grooves? Would be good to have that belt just in case hehe. Thanks!!

Thanks Crazy, the part number off of the belt directly is 6PK1650-650K6. It is a 6 groove belt and I opted for the cheaper of the two belts they offered there. I think it cost around $11.00. I am not sure of the exact AutoZone part number or the manufacturer of the belt. I couldn't find anything else on the belt itself. Hope this helps.

I would love to re route my belt without the use of delete pulleys. My tensioner pulley doesn't have lips on each edge like your alls. Mine is smooth. Does anybody have an extra tensioner pulley that they no longer want by chance? lol
My AC delete box is in the mail on it's way to me, and I took the ac box off last night. I'm still not sure what I'm going to do about the belt though.

Yea, I know. They will probably want as much as I could get it new for though. Junkyards suck here, or either they just don't like me, lol.

i defenitly think im going to have to go with no delete pulleys! i didnt think it was possible but this has been proven now. i always wondered if putting the grooves from the belt on the flat of the tensioner would cause harm but i guess not. i plan to shift at 6k too and dont think ill be putting much more than 7k on it in about 10 years.
thanks for that iroczrockz!
but you can be damn sure the first time i throw a belt im getting that ac delete pulley

I did this
I did this mod, a did it bit differently though. I don't really like the way I did mine, it didn't workout very well, but it seems to work!!
I'll post some pics tonight. It really cleans up the engine compartment.

Abubaca, what would I need to do to get rid of the smog pump on my '91 305 TPI? I do not want to mess up the computer. Also, by doing that, could I get rid of the canister, or no?
