the end of an era :(
it is my sad duty to inform the third gen brotherhood about the news i've heard today, may 29, 2002.
it appears that the last production facilitys for the camaro / firebird is located at boisbriand ( or ste-therese) in Quebec, canada, is that so?, 'cause if it is...
on late august 2002 no only will be closed but also "demolished" there will be NO MORE gm plant, it will be gone forever.
SHAME ON THE GM MANAGEMENT, in the meantime, the muswang morons will be laughing at us.
i just wish i could buy the very last one out of the production line.
Fernando.

Same thing happend in August of 1992 when the last 3rd gen was built in VanNuys CA. It is now the site of a shopping mall.

Here's a tidbit from Scott Settlemire, Brand Manager for Camaro at Chevrolet.
Good afternoon, Fellow Camaro and Firebird Enthusiasts,
Many of you have written to me in the past year or so expressing an
interest in purchasing the "last" 4th Gen. Camaro.
While the final car off the line will be put into the Chevy Historic
Collection, thereby saving it for present and future F-car people to enjoy,
we will shortly announce that we intend to auction off the last "saleable"
U.S. Camaro. It will be a Bright Rally Red Camaro Z28 coupe with Ebony
Leather Seating surfaces....an automatic transmission with Traction
control, 12-disc CD changer, Rear Defogger, Removable roof panels, Chromed
16" Aluminum wheels.......and more.....(in short, a fully loaded Camaro Z28
coupe.....)
We will donate the car to S.A.V.E. (Students Against Violence Everywhere)
which is a non-profit organization that Chevrolet Motor Division sponsors.
(see fact sheet below)
As details unfold, I'll provide you with more information.
We believe that this will allow one lucky person to own a milestone
vehicle....while also supporting a very worthy organization to help our
children.

In terms of when the last cars will be coming off the line, there was some dispute earlier...I posted this in another post on here...
For anyone who actually cares, we have gotten Firebirds in this year with all sorts of different mileages on them...as low as 1 for a 3800 silver convertible to 38 for a 6 speed blue Formula we just got yesterday. Most cars come in with 3-4 miles on them. I have not a clue as to why this one Formula has 38 on it
The Firehawks we have taken in this year have consistently had between 12 and 14 on them, save for one oddball that had 4 that I sold yesterday. I believe SLP does their own dyno test before the car leaves SLP, hence the higher average mileage.
And as for the argument that was going on previously, cars ARE still coming off St Therese's lines for some time!!! I did a status inquiry on a white T/A coupe and 2 T/A convertibles I have on order, and their TPWs (target production week) are all the first and second weeks in August!!! Clearly, these 3 cars will be among the last off the line

i just live 10 minutes away from ste-therese, (blainville) and sure the production line IS working, and i believe they will continue untill august 2002, is just sad that they'll flatten everything right after.

From what I've heard the GM employees will be offered "generous" packages, alot are taking early retirement . For those who do not retire finding another $60 000.00 a year factory job with awesome benifits will be tough. I thought I saw a little piece on the news that the Quebec government was trying to get GM to wait at least 1 year before demolishing the plant.I seen a new Z28 on a dealer lot last week and talk about sticker shock! Base price $31 000.00,price as optioned $39 000.00.This was not an SS either.Yikes. I'll have to wait 10 years before I can afford an LS1.

i was looking at a new SS today and it had the LS-1 engine with the T-56 on, just sat on it and it felt great, but i'm on your side bro. it'll be looooong before i can afford it.
by the way, the ignition is weird, is basically 1 coil per plug, last i new about this arrangement it was on the old R-3360 wright cyclone aircraft engines, (kind'a ww2 tech) but guess what, he who's gonna have to change spark plugs # 7 & 8 will be wishing to die, i just see no way to reach the area with your hands, unless removing the whole engine, but it looks so good anyway.

Don't be sad, get Glad, consider that since these cars will no longer be in production, that could mean that the value of all Camaro and Firebird cars should increase in value.

As one mentioned in a top post. Mastang owners would laugh.. I don't know about that I have heard that with the stang and the vett being the only v8 powered rear wheel drive sports cars. the price of the stangs will probably take a jump in price. And like another said, our cars should be going up in value.. I just hope some parts will still be available from the dealer.. perhaps I should stock on spare parts.

Well,
it is a shame that they are closing this plant as they did the other.
I bought a new 02 z28 4 months ago and love it. I never had a new car before so I figured I might as well get a new one (and this will be my last new car that I buy).
I actually do miss my 92 heritage z28. I got a lot more looks in the 92 than in the 02.
But I am now going to try to get back in the "3rd gen groove" again in the next month or two.
I know I cannot afford to spend $6k to $10k for a clean low mileage one like I did with my 92 z but I will search high and low for a moderate decent one.
I know I got off topic but I do beleive it will be sad when the plant closes this fall!!
Manny,
former owner on 92 z28 but I am on the lookout for an 87-90 IROC or 92 z28.
