Notchhatch Question

Yesturday i saw a Notch back TA. IT had ttops, was a marron red color, it looked like it had some gold accents. This notch was an original notch from the factory that i could tell. I was wondering from what year could this car be and how many were produced.

oh yea ....and a cop was driving it and when i asked him if it was original he said yea and smiled

Sounds like a 1988 GTA NotchBack. One of 624 made. One was built in 1989.

I saw one today At the local pontiac dealer, white, kind of rough. But its one heck of a rare car, it appeared to be an employees car. It is only the second one I have ever seen in person. White, hardtop, 5.7, tan leather (with the correct rear seats).

OK, how do you tell an original notchback from an aftermarket one? I've read that the rear seats are unique for notchbacks, but just looking at the exterior and not the seats.. is there a sure way to tell?

This is just a thought--but I know the aftermarket notch doesn't have a crease down the middle and the factory one does. I had an aftermarket hatch from motion glass a few yrs ago.
the pic is supposedly of a factory notch.

LET'S TALK COIN

How much could one expect to pay for such a car? What year(s) did they make them? I had no idea they existed until a few weeks ago when I saw a pic of one on ebay. Were they a top of the line unit? No one I have talked to has seen one in this state. What plants were they manufactured at?

I guess it would depend on the rest of the car.

From what i can see, the pic is a factory notchback. Looks just like mine. See the defroster in the back window? The only way it could be had in a factory glass.

Not sure what plant they came out of but they did'nt make them right. That's why they stopped making them. They cracked and bubbled pretty bad. I can only get 2 years out of mine before i have to resurface and refinish. It's a price i'm more than willing to pay for the look.

They were an option on top of the GTA option.

I can't see why the seats would be different, my "hatch" seats fit fine, but who knows.

Every single part is discontinued from GM. Parts are hard to find, or make your own.

As for years and numbers, see TAdans post above.

On the rear seats on the notchbacks the headrests looked like the lower front seat cushions(hard to explain) The upper headrests were much larger then reg. f-bodies-but they weren't a 2 piece style-all 1 piece.

Here's a factory notchback. The guy explained that the notch was replaced and he had a shot of the spid label--it's a real notch!

When I saw the notchbacks back in the '80s, I said "Oh my ***, why would they ruin a good-looking car?" I never could understand why it was done.

Now, however, I see one of those things and I think ""Oh my ***, why would they ruin a good-looking car?" Still looks like crap some umpteen years later - once ugly, still ugly.

Yuck.

Ugly? Personally I think the notchbacks are gorgeous. The aftermarket notches look *** awful, granted, but the factory notchback has a very nice appearance.

Of course everyone has their own personal taste. I happen to like them myself--gives that unique appearance.
