True IROC?
True IROC?
Hi Folks.
Long story short - I'm a car dealer that has aquired
(What I think is) an 87 IROC Z-28.
It's a little too rough
to retail it on our lot so we're Ebaying it.
Now we sell lots of cars but we aren't IROC
"geeks" <sorry don't mean that in a bad way<
I just mean we don't know every detail about these
cars. My question is how do I tell it's actually an IROC?
This car is a 5.0 305 V8 Automatic TBI. Has both the
Z-28 and IROC emblems.
I've had several people tell me that there were no
IROC's made with TBI so they are asking if the engine
has been swapped (Which I have no history on this car)
or if it is a fake IROC.
The VIN is 1G1FP21H3HL109450 -
I've done a little research in the web and found the VIN decoder. The engine code is LG4 and it
also says 4V induction (Not TBI or TPI)
Is there something on the car that would specify it's an IROC other than the decals? What makes it an IROC?
I only started this auction at $800.00 as I thought I was just putting an old classic on - but I've has SOOOO many emails
on this I thought I'd better clarify if I could. I just don't want to mislead anybody.
Any help from you folks is appreciated.

see if you can find the SPID sticker...it is usually in the console compartment or in the rear storage box. Check it to make sure it matches the VIN of the car and then look for the RPO codes Z28 and B4Z. Or alternately you could just input all the RPO's here and see what you come up with.
IROC's came with a whole bunch of stuff...wonderbar, better sways, shocks/struts, springs....etc. Theres a list around here somewhere.

Your VIN indicates an LG4, as you already know. The tbi motor was not available until 1988. Are you sure that it's got tbi injection? I can't imagine anybody being crazy enough to go through all that work to put tbi on.
But anyway... I don't see anything out of the ordinary except for the tbi and the wheels. In 87, the IROC-Z had Z28 badges on the ground effects and rear bumper, as well as on the dash board. You could identify the IROC positively by the RPO code "B4Z" on the RPO tag (SPID) which is attached to the underside of the center console lid.
The IROCs had everything a Z28 had, plus the 16" wheels (the wheels on your car came from a 91 or 92 though), stiffer springs, Billstein shocks/struts, same-color ground effects, different steering box and the wonderbar. The Wonderbar is a good thing to check for. It doesn't guarantee that it's an authentic IROC, but for those few people that actually know about it, it's doubtful that they'd spend the money on a fake IROC unless it was a damned nice one. The wonderbar is a support bar that ties the front of the subframe together. It's mounted directly in front of the front sway bar, right behind the radiator support.

Thanks for quick reply!
Thanks for your help everybody!
You are correct in questioning the TBI. It does not have it.
When I checked the specs it says "Induction 4V" which if I'm reading it right, just means 4 barrel carb. So no TPI or TBI injection.
I did check the codes like you said and it is an IROC Z-28.
I just set up and run the auctions for the dealership and obviously don't know near enough about IROCs. ( I'm not worthy!!!)
I've never had so many auction emails about one piece of information! Hopefully I've got this figured out!
Thanks again! Carrie

To prove to people walking up to see the car, the IROC was the only car available in 87 with the 16" wheels. If the placard is still on the drivers door, it should state the tire size of 245 - 50 16. This will prove to the common folk the IROC issue. Good Luck!

Why does everyone say the SPI label is on the lid? My label is in the glove box on the side viewable from the drivers seat. I have never seen them on the bottom of the lid.
