The last 3rd gen was a Camaro. I do not know the details but I'm sure other guys here who know the car will post about it.

I believe the last 3rd gen Firebird was a red GTA, I'll check my 92 Firebird VIN archive to be sure, I don't quite remember off hand....

Last third-gen was a '92 Camaro Z28 heritage edition red with black stripes. It was a 350 car with red leather interior, power everything even a block heater. Although I don't think it got rear window louvers. Rolled off the line in Van Nuys Aug 27, 1992 and is believed to still be with the original owner in Iowa.

Even eerier ... my b-day is also August 27th.

The last 3rd gen came off the line at Van Nuys on 8/27/92 and the last 4th gen came off the line at Ste Therese on 8/27/02 ...

I believe the last 3rd gen came off the line at Norwood on 8/26/87 ...

Full scale production began for the third-gen on October 12, 1981 at Van Nuys. Exactly two weeks later on October 26th Norwood started production. Supposedly job one was a Gold Z28. There was a magazine article a few years ago on this car. Maybe someone else on the board has seen it.

a little off topic but related,
I would not be surprised if GM doed not own the first cars of each line Firebird and Camaro from each year. I know they still own #1 Firebird from 1992.

I also know that in some cases GM owns the last ones of a model as well, as is the case for many buicks I have seen at the Sloan Museum.

On another side note: I have a friend (Will not disclose name sorry) that has been to a wherehouse for Ford, he said there was thousands of cars in racks that were one of each make and model that they ever made. I hear GM has one too...

hope this sheads some light...

From what I understand the only reason he got to go there was they needed to see how something was designed or they needed a part. THey put him in a Limo with really dark windows, he could not see out, and they drove him there, got the part and left, so the wharehouse could be anywhere.

That car went to Dick Guldstrand. I remember seeing it a Hot Rod article on suspension setup back in '82-'83....

I guess he knew the right people!

Does anyone know the vin number of the car that went to Dick.
My Firebird was build on Dec 21st, 1981. I was wondering how mainy was build before mine.

Do we have a source of ViNs from all early thirdgens that are still in existance.

Maybe someone can set up a database on this site to track the history of all thirdgens still in existance.

That would be cool.....I'd love to know that 1G1AP87H9DL128728 was still "alive".

It's my '83 Z28, my first new car, and I still have the VIN memorized!

If you want to know the history on your thirdgen that you once own, please go to the www.carfax.com website. I just went there there are 5 reports about the car listed.

I had it ran a year or so ago, it was last titled in Pearland, Texas in 1995.....so I guess the same guy has owned it for the last 10 years.

I just hope he didn't strip/cut it up to make a drag car out of it....

Probably something like:

1 G 1 A ? 8 7 ? ? C L 1 0 0 0 0 1

Since we do not know the Actual engine & Body type we cant figure the Check didget

Likewise THe first Firebird SHOULD be:

1 G 2 A ? 8 7 ? ? C L 2 0 0 0 0 1

If it's an LG4 (305 carb) it's 1G1AP87HXCL100001
If it's an LU5 (crossfire) it's 1G1AP8770CL100001
Run either one of those VIN's on Carfax and see what comes up.

I think it would important to know of how many thirdgens are still in existance today. Does Pontiac and Chevy get feedback from each state when they become salvage, etc?

I do know that Pontiac has all of the information on my 82 Firebird. When the dealer did the engine install, they did some kind of paper work to update the state and GM.

That may have been something like CarFax I know there is alot of info there but its not completely accurate. I know of a Burned - now crushed junkyard 86 Camaro that according to CarFax is still in existance. I know for a fact that it is gone becamseu I have the ECM from the car.

THere are some records, unfortunately there are alot of variables that are unavoaidalbe. IE, cars that have been striped of everything ,but are sitting in somones yard. It still exists but should it be considered still in existance? What about the 2 cars I have for parts, I would not count them as still in existance. There is just no perfect means to accomplish what would be good information.

I know there is some of that available on limited production cars like 73 & 74 SD Formulas, There is a group of people trying to buy them all up, since there was less than 100 of them made or something keeping tabs on them is not so difficult.

The best thing we could do is start a registry here on TGO, where you put in your VIN, options and then go from there. Still not perfect, but an interesting idea any way.
