Z28 or RS?

I just found a 91 Z28 or so it appears. Car has all Z badges (including the rear bumper badge depicting 5.7), hood blisters and the rear wing. Has a drum rear and TBI. Car id is 1G1FP23E8ML181869. Did someone go to an awful lot of trouble to clone an RS to a Z28 or is it a real Z? VIN decoder claims it is a 305 TBI. Is this possible for a Z28? Thanks for any info.

I had the same thing and mine turned out to be an RS. From what I've learned through my own intelligence gathering the tell tale signs will be the TBI (RS) vs TPI (Z28) and the 110 speedo.

Not to mention that it's badged wrong. The TBI (L03) is 5 liter not 5.7 as your rear badging indicates.

If the rear storage box still has the cover on it check the RPO codes but from the looks of the vin I'll bet lunch that it's an RS.

The 91 Z28 was not available with the 305 TBI, therefore it can't be a Z28.

don't buy an rs, my first car was an rs... if you have the money buy a z28 or better yet save up and buy a z28 if you don't.

when i first started shopping i'm like "i don't care about speed" but after a while all those hondas smoking you gets to you. at that point in time you realize RS = really slow.

no offense to anybody who owns an RS

Well, I own an RS L03 and it makes me really happy. The car is undergoing restoration and will then be my sunday car. I got it for fun and have no intentions of racing it.

If you wanna Z then get one, don't waste your time trying to mod an RS to do what a Z will out of the box.

I can say this though, when I was a patrol officer I chased several hot cars (several rustangs and a couple of firebirds). The last was an '89 IROC. I stayed with him in my 97 Crown Vic and ultimately took him to jail after he wrecked out (got video to prove it). I really feel that it isn't in the horsepower but in your ability to drive. This is just my opinion though.

well, I say it all depends on how much they want for the car. It is is cheap and is in good shape go for it. You can always put a 350 in it later. Just dont pay Z28 price for a RS.

My car is a 89 rs but is a 92 clone. It has the motor, interior, 140 mph speedo, ground f/x, wing and hood. All these parts came from a original 92 25th anniversary z. The only thing I did not change out was the rear end. I wanted to keep the drum brakes for drag racing. I do not portray my car as a original z. If anyone asks I tell them it is a 89 RS. And if I ever sell my car they will be shown on the title 89 RS.

Even in my sig it says "clone". I love my car even though it is not a original Z. It even has T-tops.

So if you can get a good deal buy it. Then drop a 350 down in it.

Actually, the 8th digit (E), gives it away. It is the code for the 305 TBI.

Also, it is incorrect to say if it has a 110 mph speedo, it is an rs. The are some 205hp 305 tpi engines that got the 110 speedo.

I just saw one last week.

Also, save some money and get the z28!!! I had both an 91 rs with the 305 tbi and a 92 z28 with the 350 tpi. It is a world of difference.

Manny, still without a thirdgen.
