PLease help me debunk my professor
OK...my medical school prof was talking about his son's 84 Z28 (somehow we got of the topic of endocrine pathology). Anyway, the guys a real *** and has several nice sports cars. He said his son has a 84 Z28 with an L69 engine that came stock with both a 5-speed trans and a Dana-44 with 4.10's. That is exactly what he said. Was this combo even available ever has an option? Maybe it was , but knowing the rarity (I suppose) of the Dana, I guess I am suspicious. Also, he sucks and I want to tell him hes full of it.
Does anybody know??

The Dana 44 never came as a factory option on any Thirdgen, but it was available as a dealer-installed item.

I think the T-5 was available with the L69 in 1984, I'm pretty sure it wasn't available in 1983 though. If the dealer had swapped in the Dana 44, it could have possibly been purchased brand new like that, but I don't know if I'd describe it as "stock".

Yes that engine was available with a T-5. But that car did not come from the factory with that axle or ratio.

Alright....I guess I'll let him slip by on this one. I tried to talk to him about cars; its like trying to speak english to someone from England. I think he knows what he is talking about, but I can almost guarantee he's never stood in his driveway at 10 PM in a grease covered, ripped shirt, holding a heavy water pump, thinking "how the hell am I going to get this thing back together ao I can drive to work in the morning?"
oh well. And I cant really say anything to him after the course either because there is a good chance on end up on rotation with him for 6 weeks next year. Yikes! Better hold my tongue. Thanks for all the info.

Just a quick reminder that even us teachers/profs are human too!! Be kind to us poor, badly paid, overworked souls!!

I've instructed juniors and seniors in English for 27 years. I grin to admit that there's nothing cooler than students who identify with my passion for Camaros. Recently, a young woman told me that I was WAY too old to drive an awesome car like an IROC (now should I flunk her butt for calling me old or provide extra-credit for complimenting my car--oh, the dilemmas we educators face).
About know-it-alls. Well, arrogance is arrogance whatever the profession.

Ditto to the preceding posts. Factory options are not the same as dealer options. RPO codes rarely reflect the dealer options, so unless one has written documentation from the original owner and the dealership its hard to verify such things.
I have three 84 TAs, all with L69 5-speeds. And yes, they had 3.73 axles.
Also, I am one of those professor people--I have a PhD in music. Just last month I did a promo photo shoot for a local paper to advertise a concert I was doing. They did a spread of me in black tails with my white 15th Ann. The reporter ended up writing more about my cars than about my music. I'm not sure if that's good or bad!

I never expected to get replies from other teachers/ professors; its interesting to see the other side of the coin. Whats really neat is that my professor would rather talk to me about car projects etc. rather than field the lame academic questions posed by other students.
I gained a new level of respect for him when he showed the class all his car pics. He has a habit of singling out students in our class of about 120 and putting them on the spot to answer difficult case scenarios; I just wanted something in my back pocket (e.g. about his car) in case he wanted to play rough.
So, this is interesting; a dealer option wont show an RPO code likely.
