obscure Firebird Package

I was curious if any one had any information on a package that Pontiac put on the firebird between '86 and 90. I believe that it was a one year only thing. The package was a base firebird with "wheel spats" very similar to the 70-81 Trans Ams and a unique "duck tail" spoiler. From my understanding not too many were produced, guess it was a little too retro. I have seen two here in SC, does any one know if this was a regional item? I am pretty sure that it was not a dealer installed item or an aftermarket conversion like the Bandit II. Any information is appreciated.

I have never seen anything like that. My guess is that if it was a factory thing it was a dealer installed option. It is also possible that it was a popular fad in the area to do that to a Firebird. Like clear lights are on almost all the Honda's here. Same thing possibly. I guess the only real way to tell is if the owners of the cars are the original owners or if you could get an RPO code list from them.

Otherwise we can only really speculate. I am wondering if the duck tail spoiler you are reffering to is the Camaro spoiler. Not the high rise one. That would fit a Firebird. It would just look odd. considering the difference in taillight shape and design.

I know what you are talking about. It was a factory option on base birds in 1988 only. I forget the the name of it however...

Yes, that is it exactly. Funny though that picture and the two that I have seen are all red.

So from the scaned image I am guessing that it was dealer installed?

Thanks ya'll.

umm, no, it was NOT a dealer installed item... It was like the RS of 1988 with the little "wing", it was an option from GM... here is straight from the 82-92 Firebird Parts & illustration manual.

IF it was a dealer installed thing then I would doubt that it would be in the parts & illustration manuals from GM/Pontiac...

To my knowledge it was ONLY available on the BASE firebird, not on the Formula & obviously not on the T/A & GTA...

Also notice it had its own unique RPO code "Z20"

I havent seen them very often. I like them though, alot. Just about all the 3rd gens around here have aftermarket rims or the gta style diamond spoke aluminum...I've got the diamond spoke ones. I have seen those rims before though...but i think i just noticed how much i like them.

Heh, maybe it's because they're clean. Im so sick of seeing 3 inches of salt dust on everything.....

That's similar to a package that GM offers for current ( or last year's, rather ) Firebirds. The 4th gen one is available from the factory, dealer installed, or over the counter. The fact that the sheet 92gta posted includes part numbers and the statement "paint to match" indicates that the third gen package would have been available all three ways as well.

any idea how many were made?

i'm not big on the spats, though. tries to make the car look like a 2nd gen, imo.
