1987 L98 Ttops
1987 L98 Ttops
A trans am collector I know has a 1987 350, T-tops, digital dash, black paint, and black cloth interior GTA with 70,000 miles on it without 1 scracth, it is a real cherry. All that is wrong with it is that a piston went out 6 years ago and has been stored since, I wanted to know if this car is a rarer car, and if 2,900 is the right price, I could not find out much info on 87 GTA 350 Ttops, thanks

You're looking at a car with 80,000 miles that doesn't run, and its $3000? You're insane if you even contemplate it. If the car was in perfect running condition with those miles and no other problems it would probably only be worth about $5000-6000. It's going to cost nearly $1000 just to rebuild the engine, then you have the possibility of bad fuel pump, bad tranny, alignment issues, etc...
Its not rare, and its overpriced. Keep shopping.

You couldn't find any info on a 87 L98 w/ ttops because they didnt make any. You could not get ttops w/ the L98 in 87. And I agree w/ Drew, why too much $$$ for a car with a blown engine that has been sitting for 6yrs. Max price I would give for that car is $1500(and that's pushing it), because who knows what else is wrong with it to make road worthy.

I thought any 1987-1989 5.7 L98s was available with t-tops. Starting in 1990 is when t-tops were not available because of to much torque.....
which is why my 1991 Z28 5.7 L98 dosen't....

Exactly, I about 100% sure that 87-89 IROC-Zs COULD have a 5.7 L98 and t-tops....from 1990-1992....the 5.7's L98s could not have t-tops because of to much torque.....
Well I was talking specifically about GTA's not camaros...Anyway, sorry I guess I should have been more specific, according to the order sheets in 87(FOR GTA's) the option was not available. But I guess some squeeked through.

"Could you get a 350 TPI GTA with T-tops?"
Yes, and No. Initially for 1987, only 5.0L GTAs could have T-tops installed; they were not, according to the order sheets, available in any Firebird model with a 5.7L engine. This must have changed at some point during the year, as I have seen 1987 GTAs with both options.

Ok Please listen this time. My friend collects 1, and 2 gen, "Trans-Am's) not camaro's. Fully Restored cars, show quality, picture perfect cars, Im trying to say he knows his **** about T/A,s and So do I a little. I also know there is a 1987 350- Ttop car in his garage, with the original window sheets for the car, he is the 2nd "owner" the only place he "drove" this car i guess you could say was into his garage for 5 years untouched. He bout this car from his friend and he has just left it alone and now wants it gone to make more space, plain and simple. This car is absolutely beautiful, Paint is Perfect, Interior is Perfect, is even smells like a new car inside no joke. The doors shut like a brand new car also, and for a motor rebuild being 1000 with parts I did not think 2,900 is a bad price at all considering this is a rare car. And he also has the stock trans which is fine but I already have a rebuilt 700R4 ready to go. Yes the 8th digit on the vin is "8" and I took the t-tops off so I know they are there. Plain and simple this car does exist and I just wanted your thoughts on the price, not you thoughts about telling me this car is a fake, thanks,

it's not a fake and it's not rare either. $2900 for a car that's sat for years and needs a rebuild does sound like a lot, esp since it already has 70k. if you're really worried about keeping it a 'rare' factory original, use the original transmission, or at least hang onto it. overall it sounds like a real nice car, but there are a lot of issues to get it back in shape, so my advice is just to be careful not to overpay.
'rare' GTAs would be things like red/red GTA's, convertibles, TTAs, yellow or any of the 92-only colors, or the occasional 91 5.7 t-top that slipped by.

hmmm.....I have a red/red GTA I swapped the interior out for black. A car is only rare when the stuff you're looking at is near mint. As soon as my interior had tears and wear everywhere....it stopped being rare.
The same can be said for the GTA you're looking at. But then again.....for 1 grand you'd have a beautiful GTA on top of the price you'd pay. Good luck to ya

Really depending on the minor things that always go wrong these cars, this car might be worth a price in that area. The mileage does not make it really anything too special unless you plan to keep it at that for another 10 years. But if the paint and interior are excellent and you have some connections for parts and labor, or can do some of it yourself, then you can have a really nice car there. I'd still haggle about the price though, just bc the cheaper you get it the more you can spend on making it as you want it.
