which engine came through stock on all formulas??

I just wanted to make sure i was not mistaken and have the wrong info. But as far as i know is this correct?: All formulas came through stock with the LO3 TBI setup? You had to order the other 2 different sets of engines if you wanted if to be different the LB9 or the L98-(turning your formula into a formula 350 with the L98)

Not totally correct, 87-89 it was the L03 but 91-92 it was the LB9. 90 I am not 100% sure about...

yeah ok thats what i was thinking also. So basically no 97-89 formula came through with the LB9 it had to be ordered that way? Which means my car was ordered so there has to be some type of a order sheet from the owner. Lets hope i can get ahold of them and get it.

The dealership could have ordered it that way, the fact that you have the LB9 does guarante that your car was a special customer order. From what I've seen, MOST 87-89 Formula's have the LB9 which to me would indicate that most dealerships ordered them that way...

Whoa whoa whoa...I've seen a '91 Formie with TBI, I swear. I thought the LG4 was standard in '87, followed by the LO3 '88-'92...am I wrong?

Yeah what 92GTA is saying in his reply is that 91-92 they came stock from the factory with the LB9 and if you wanted to downgrade the engine to get credit back you could order it with the LO3. At least i think thats what hes saying....

hey woah jason....your like 15 min away from me......small world.

TorchRay,

In that case, my AIM name is JasonEE98 I work for Fedor Olds Pontiac in Easthampton...heard of us? You may have seen the 35 '02 Birds we had...courtesy of me

Dude, I had your car, in Medium Maui blue, last year for about 4 months. I wish I had kept it, but at the time 3 cars was just too much for me to handle.

We should meet up sometime!

A 91 with TBI? Never heard of that before but I could be wrong. In 91 and 92 I didn't even think you could get TBI in a Formy. I'd like to see some proof on that one.

You are correct, in 87 it was the LG4, then in 88 it was the L03...

Just remenber that the LB9 and L98 were OPTIONS and not standard on any Firebird models. The Dealer or Customer ordered these options and paid for them.

Sorry, wrong. In 91 and 92 the LB9 was STANDARD on the Trans Am and the L98 has ALWAYS been STANDARD on the Trans Am GTA. I also believe that the LB9 was STANDARD on the 91 & 92 Formy's...

They made have been standard for those years, but the original buyer still paid for it by the increased sticker price. So thank the original buyers for paying the upgrade prices.

Well, I do have a May (I think) '91 Motor Trend with a test of an LB9 5 speed Formula. Cool test...they have the 5.0 TPI listed as an option above and beyond the LO3...so thats where I'm coming from anyways...

I'll second that---I have that road test and a 91 Firebird borchure...the TBI was the standard engine from 88-92. Also I have seen a 91 Formula with the LO3---and nones crazy enough to swap in that POS engine!

Formulas are super rare in Calgary--the couple I have seen were LG4 and LO3.
Which is unfortunate cause Formulas rock! I can't understand why they were never a huge seller.

They were the only direct competitor to a 5.0 Mustang LX

Yeah same here. Maybe it's a Canadian thing. I've seen only 2 examples in my city. One was a 350 Formula (I was actually thinking of knocking on the guys door and putting an offer on the car) and the other was a 305 TPI. There's probably more though I havent seen

When I tried figuring that out for my LB9 Formie, I quickly learned, as always stated here, there's no way to figure that out. LB9s were used in Formies, TAs and GTAs...so there's no breakdown for how many ended up in Formulas, unfortunately

Look forward to talking with you sometime!

The Formula standard engines from 87-92 break down like this:

87: 305 LG4 4bbl
88-92: 305 LB3 TBI

The TPI motors were always an extra cost option.
