I changed my plenum last week since i bought a ported one. My question is: When i turned the new plenum and looked at the back side it said 88 , well that could be true since i took it from a 1988 thirdgen. But why does the original one say 87??? Shouldnt it say 88 since my car is from 1988????
Another thing that i find funny is in the registration paper it says Enginefamily:LGG57V8NT87. Theres the 87 again.
Anybody got an idea what this is about??
Did somebody change engines???

Keep in mind that a car is actually built the previous year from it's model year. For example, your '88 was actually built and sold in 1987. All of the new cars released this year are '04s, but they were made this year, '03.

Wow I'm bad at wording these things... lol

Actually you are half correct, Usually the production run goes from about August of 1987 through August 1988 for a 1988 modle year/

Maybe the car is an 1987 model that wasn't registerred until 1988, so the title says it's an 88? Have you checked the VIN? There are quite a few "1993" thirdgens around here.

Actually it would not matter when the car was registered, the VIN is for the Model year and an 88 is an 88. An 88 car registered in 99 is still an 88.

Not in Austria or Germany. Don't know how it's in Sweden though.

I guess I am really confused... How can they change the VIN??? If a car is sold a different year than its model year, that does not change the model year of a car, and I would not think they they could change the vin of the car...

GM uses whatever is available at the time of assembly. If components are left over from the previous model year run they get used. The "88" on your plenum probably has nothing to do with the year. It's probably something the foundry used to mark that batch. The tenth character of the VIN tells the model year, irregardless of the production date, end of story.
