Speaking of 89 converts
Well...
Those who recall my old posts may remember something about a mention of a car like mine that someone thought was mine, but I knew it wasn't (that two places at once thing not perfected yet hehe)
I saw that car again, and upon closer inspection it's a white GTA Trans Am convertible with the same spoiler as mine, but w/ third eye taillight, unlike mine. Not sure if 1989 or not but looks like the one in the sticky thread...almost a dead ringer!
I'll try for pics when I get the opportunity

Pics now online!
OK, folks in the know....
How can I nail down a year on these GTAs? The interesting thing is that spoiler is seen to end by the door typically (at least for 1989) but on this GTA, it continues past the door for several inches. The gold rims seem to match mine and the interior is a better option then my standard cloth... Have a look:

I'd cropped and rescaled these images shot in SVGA medium digital mode on a 1.3 megapixel camera, but some are still to big so I'll have to compress them a bit more. The downside is the limited focus becomes worse on these edited images...hopefully these look good on the end-user's monitor display. This is a big downside but it beats paying for a site to host them hehe

Didn't think it was two of the same...so, back to the drawing board. I think the second looks better to my eyes. Anyway, got two front shots, one from both sides. Will add those too.

I don't know Firebirds, but I can offer some logical speculation. The side extensions with the door "fillers" were used in all of 1987 and the first 1988 convertibles only. Here's a pic of my '87 Z28.

Thanks Willie..
That's exactly the feature I want to highlight, but aside from that, I can't explain the indent in my trunk and no taillamp there...odd.
Mine is 89 as you know, so I'd say this GTA is older, but I wouldn't say by too much...probably 1988?
hmmmmm... I'm sure they won't mind me reading & writing their VIN in the parking lot!

.... and here's mine in keeping with the 1989 subject. I'm keeping an eye out for a new nose in good shape but they haven't been seen by me yet. The key is finding the same white and black to replace the old one.

What is the history of the third gen taillights? I mean the third eye, of course. I'll supply a close up of mine, but the deck lid took a bit of a scrape and is now rusting. It's not a pretty sight. I never said I was the greatest driver in the world, which has led to hitting inanimate objects!! Ouch!

Closer shot somewhere, but maybe I'll take ashot inside the trunk.
You can tell there is an indent and no third tailight. I'd rather have a trailer hitch to be honest!
hehe

Third eye taillight:
Here's the pic I shot this week.
It took a hit so there is some rust, but it's all in the plans to fix.
Ugly now, I know

There is a 1989 GTA convertible on eBay currently that leads me to believe that on mine, one would mount flush to the indent and come to the top of the spoiler, but the spoiler is seperate from the trunk with two risers, typical of regular spoilers.
There are two end caps that have come off mine, but luckily I didn't lose them.

I'm glad i stumbled accross this post. I had seen that extended spoiler piece in a few pics, but have always wondered if this was apart of some limited edition model from GM. I own an 89 IROC vert, and don't have those peices on the door? (http://www.cardomain.com/id/chubbrock ) Are they just on GTA's?

The filler piece on the doors was used only on 1987 and very early 1988 Camaro convertibles. The side extensions adhered to the rear quarters are also different -- the front edge on the 1987 and early 1988's were sharp and pointed. They are rounded on the mid 1988 thru 1992 convertibles.

I didn't provide a link to the auction that may have ended (was off line for 2 days...etc) The seller tells me that his GTA is one of 50 and any Formulas and others were made outside the 50 quantity, to the tune of 250 total for the year (as he says). I'm still not convinced though.
This would include Camaros and Firebirds or just Firebirds? (I believe it's the later) [sp?]
I think the earlier figure discussed was about 360 for all 1989 convertibles. Can I get confirmation in this thread?
I am curious now about the spoiler attachments.... Will have to look at the Camaros again hehe
