assembly plant?

I was wondering what the diff is between an 84 Z28 HO Camaro that was mad at Norwood vs. Van Nuys? Thanks Cody.

paint

I'm 99 % sure it was just paint quality.van nuys was in California which had stricter EPA standards and had to you enamel water based paint .norwood plant had better paint that almost bonded to the paint better.Hopes this helps

The Norwood, Ohio assembly plant had better paint & quality due to a slower assembly line vs the Van Nuys.

The paint wasn't better because it was a slower line, its because the "bad paint" was water-based and is crap. The other is good oil-based paint. They also had a better painting process.

I just said the Paint & Quality was better and not because the line speed was slower. I am a original owner of a 87 Norwood car.

The Plant was closed in June 1987 due to GM's cost reductions and the so called inefficent operation of the nearly fifty year old three storied plant. The Van Nuys plant survived only to be closed after the 92
model year. The 4th Gen production was moved to Canada and it also suffered the same plant closing in 2002. That is the short history.

It has been said by a few people that the build quality of the Norwood cars is better. Not only due to the better paint facilities but just the quality of the assembly usually came out better. That is until mid to late 1987 where it dropped sharply.

Now this so called better quality build isn't enough to make you want to go out and specifically get a Norwood car. It's not that big of a difference.

The paint was only better because stupid California air laws made the aresol style paint illegal. So they had to use a different base which didn't last as long or adhere to the cars as well.

The Van Nuys facility stayed open because it was more modern and cranked out cars alot faster. I think it was cheaper to operate as well due to being tooled better.

Why specifically an 87? Why do you want an 87 so bad? Theres not much difference from 87-90. Minor differences in 1991 and 1992.

You can find the Assembly plant in your Vin, should be the last letter (N) Norwood & (L)Van Nuys before the last five numbers.

The L03 (TBI) was offered in the 1988 model and not before.

I belive he wants a 87 because it could be from the norwood plant... as said before, after 87, the plant closed down. The Norwood plant is the original f body plant... kinda has that ora i guess... like I said before... my car passed through the same assembly plant as some of the best camaro's ever made.
