Dodge Charger
Dodge had a ad in Hot Rod for the 2.2 beating Firebird and Z28 Camaro in trials done by NHRA in 0 to 60 timings.
The car was pitted against the 305 V8s so it didn't bode well for V8 vs smaller powerplants.
This from the Sept 82 issue I have.

You sure that says 0-60? The big Dodge performance ads back then were always 0-50 claims.
Now the GLHS in '86 and '87 was a nice package and could keep up with any V8 camaro/bird for the most part. Mid 14's was nothing to sneeze at.

I've always been curious about this also. Dodge advertised that their Iroc Daytona was faster than a Camaro Iroc-z. But I never heard what they were compairing engine wise.

If I remember right, there was one year that the dodge shelby charger would beat the vette in the 1/4. Don`t remember which year it was though.

Anyway, they were/are capable of running against any IROC Z.

Sept 82....I don't remember any 82 camaro/firebirds that were very fast bone stock. Especially 0-60 times with the crappy th200c auto or 4sp saginaw manual that were available. I doubt they were running t10 4sp. A later(but still early thirdgen) 84 L69 3.73 posi 5sp would have a much better 0-60.

Trans Am time was 6.67, Z28; 6.47 and the Charger's sprint was 6.02 according to the ad data.
I have no doubt the early 80s and even some 70s cars were more impressive on paper do to the technology not advanced to deal with the restrictions placed on cars around the time.
I still think it's interesting to look at the F-car in retrospect and what other manufacturer's responses were. I think early results can often effect public response to a brand, even though there's always room for improvements.

Nothing to drool over? You must not have a clue about the 2.2/2.5 Turbo cars then. If you did, youd realize how easy it is to get those cars into the 12's, and even 11's. There is a guy around here with an 86 LeBaron K-car, 4 door with a 2.2 Turbo I, automatic running 12.30's with very mild work done to it. Very streetable and passing emissions too.
Back in 90, I had a 86 Cavalier Z24 with the 87 Z24 CL air inducted hood and additional spoilers. I ran a friends 90 Daytona ES Turbo and held with him up to 65, then gradually pulled away. He told me later that he couldn't catch me. Another friend bought the then new 90 Shadow ES Turbo. He thought the car was fast until we raced and I beat him too. My Z24 was stock, no mods. Their cars were new and turbocharged!
