Ummm... no.

GM tends to pick random names out of a hat for no reason. GTO is the same way, no special reason, they just liked it I guess.

Actually, GTO DOES stand for something...

Gran Turismo Omolagato...Italian for Grand Touring something...the name was ripped off a Ferrari GTO of the same era. GTA probably means nothing (Grand Trans Am maybe??), but GTO definitely stands for something....

Ummm... yes

Taken directly from the GTAsourcepage:

The term "GTA" stands for "Gran Turismo Americano"; an interesting take off of the famous "GTO moniker of the 1960s and 1970s, as well as various models produced by Italian automaker Ferrari. The name also was another way to tie-in to the "euro" concept that Pontiac was trying to market with the cars.

Boy... reading comprehesion sure lacks here...

So, since nobody understood it:
"was it a featured car in some league called gran turismo americano?"

No.

"Actually, GTO DOES stand for something... "

I knew that, and yes, GM did pick it out of a hat.

Not according to anything I have ever read on the subject, but I don't feel like getting into a contest over it, either. I don't think the choice was coincidental. I have read it was deliberate.

Supposedly Ferrari was pretty ticked off in '64 when the GTO came out, C&D compared it directly with the Ferrari GTO, and good ol' Pontiac themselves knew they were naming it after a Ferrari, as it was there new "sport compact" car, if you will...

But like I said, I'm not gonna start a war over this either...

There is no need for a statement like that. Sometimes I wonder how old the mods are on his board...

There's no need for your statement either... I guess you must be even younger than I.
