Any such thing as a "Pro/Am" Firebird?

Any such thing as a "Pro/Am" Firebird?

Saw an '88 Firebird on a used car lot today, it had "Pro/Am" lettering on the doors where the "Formula" insignia would normally be.

Ran the vin and it came back as an LO3 motor (auto trans). The car was pretty rough, some body damage/gap misalignment, fake hood dome. The asking price was 3,000! Maybe somebody would pay that much, but not me!

Anyway, back to my original point,
has anybody heard of a Pro/Am car or is that just something the guy had painted on his door?

Just an aftermarket conversion done to base model cars, I think done by a place called Choo-Choo Customs. There's a few down here where I am, and like the one you saw a lot of them are pretty beat. There's even Pro-Am III 4thgen firebirds; V6 basemodels with paint, graphics and a fake ram air hood.

For all intents and purposes it is basically a Bandit II with a different hood. Although, I haven't seen one in quite a while.

There are Pro-Am's I, II, III, and IV. And all of them suck royally. I finally saw a Pro-Am II just the other day, so that completes it. I have officially seen all four models. I actually like how the Pro-Am IV's look though.

I see the Pro-Am I quite often. The guy who owns it comes to my work a lot. His car is an early model third gen firebird, like 83 or 84. The only thing unique about it is the Pro-Am I logo.

I only saw a Pro-Am IV once, and it was the second best looking fourth-gen I have seen, first being the Firehawk. The Pro-Am IV looked like it had special GFX, and a special paint job. I am not sure what engine it had though, but I am pretty sure it was an LS1.

The Pro-Am I, II, and III that I saw were all V-6's, and really slow at that. If my mini-van can smoke them, then I know they are slow.

The Pro Am IIs that I have seen have all been TBI 305s. The hood was just over the top. I think that the Bandit II by Choo Choo was much better, but the big bird just did not look right on the third gen.

Do you know where I can find pictures of the P/A IV?

All the Pro Ams I ever saw on the lots were base V8 Firebirds. Either LG4 or LO3. The only exception would have been the V6 4th gen Firebird conversions.

The guy that I know that has the Pro-Am I definately has a V6. I only saw the Pro-Am II once, and I noticed it only had one tail-pipe, so I figured it was a V6 as well. The Pro-Am III I see quite often, also has only one tailpipe. The Pro-Am IV however, distinctly sounds like an 8 cylinder SBC.

hey i almost bought one in awesome shape, '87 Firebird (base, im sure, had the "firebird" badge on the side) w/ a 400 for $1600. had outlaw IIs on it, looked pretty mean, was red w/ silver bottom two tone paint. Had the Pro Am II stickers in silver, and some silver lightning looking stuff. guy said pics were old, he took the graphics off, but I wondered just wtf Pro/Am II was for, hehe. btw I live in Dallas, TX
