ok so I got a GM restoration kit in the mail finally. I read through it pretty closely. I was looking for my interior color but it says it never came as an option in my car...or in any 1988 Camaros. Well so I got to the last page and I notice a little something about a red custom interior. This is what it says, "Red custom cloth and red leather seating were planned but cancelled in July 1987 due to materials problems. Few, if any, were built."


Does anyone know about this? When I ran my RPO codes, it came up with having a Dark Carmine Red interior.

 

Do you have the standard interior or the custom cloth? The Camaro White Book say's that standard cloth interior was available in red, but not custom cloth or leather.

 

I have the standard cloth interior. I saw it in the white book myself. Its on the like last page or second to last page near the bottom. Its under Car Colors. I'll get it and scan it in. Also I know its not the standard red because I went to replace my drivers side seat belt with a red one and it was too bright of a red. This color is almost the color of blood. When I get home today I'll snap a few pics of the interior and of the White Book.

 

well I'm now at home but I forgot the camera. I am though looking at my Camaro White pages. The information is located on page 101 under 1988 Colors, 4th bullet down.

 

Yes, but there were only four interior colors available in 1988, Black, Grey, Brown, and Red. For whatever reason Red was not available in custom cloth or leather, but was available in the standard cloth. If you have standard cloth, then you have one the colors that were available, and it is not rare.

 

well here are the RPO codes that are in my glovebox that list a Dark Carmine interior.

72B : TRIM COMBINATION, CLOTH, DK CARMINE (B)
72I : INTERIOR TRIM, DK CARMINE (91)
729 : SEAT BELT COLOR, DK CARMINE (9) (91)

 

 

The RPO decoder is also geared more towards 1991 models. The same RPO code for 88 would show red. GM reuses RPO codes for similar items over different years.

 

I got the Carmine interior... <shudders> what were they thinking?
