the 82 83 84 firebird round button auto trans shifters, info ?

ok i just want to try and find out for once and for all, in 82 with the 200C auto tranny, the trans ams and whatever else had the round button type auto tranny shifter ok

now.. my button instead of a pontiac arrow image on it it has a red firebird image

how do i find out what ones this button was used on ?

how many years was the round shifter used no matter hwat image was on the button ?

i have so far seen as late as 84 still using round shifter although is not same image on the button

what is the final word on this ?

anyone really know ?

or just guessing ?

will this subject always be in debate and never really ever understood ?

seems like the latter

i hope its not too uncommon because the big round part you fit your hand around to shift with it bustged the other day on me and slid all way down the shifter stalk, so now the button is all by itself at the top of the stalk it still works good depresses fine and all that but the big round part busted hat little metal piece out of it in there that keeps it form sliding down the stalk

how can i repair this ? some real strong plastic rubber epoxy of some kind ?

or just hope i can find another one from an 82 83 84 ?

thanks for anything

Not a bird, but both my 84 and 86 sport coupes had the round shift **** like you describe. Blank buttons though.

That shift **** was used on the 200C only. Any 3rd gen Firebird with the 200C has it.

The button you describe came from a 2nd gen.

awesome, good info, no my stalk/shaft/stem is black still, just the button is red spread eagle image,

how do i know if the round black handgrip part is 2nd or 3rd gen ?

no mods have to be done to 2nd gen handles to sit them on a 3rd gen stalk/shaft/stem ?

Not to hijack but while this post is active and we're talking about 200c trannies. My shifter is screwy too. the button is constantly depressed, so i dont (cant) have to push it down to select gears, its just slids through them without pushing the button as it is already depressed.

simple solution?

not a hijack at all, this is open message forum and is on topic,

shifters

if third gen handles are kinda diamond shape like you jsut showed up there then mine is the third gen one, so thats cool

my button was screwed up like that too, you need to pull your button out and there is a spring steel flat thin tang on two sides of the shaft that the button is part of, youll see all this when you pull the button out

you need to bend the tangs so they go i nside of the steel shaft stalk of the shifter assembly so that it will pop up when you arent depressing it

will be all better then

one tang busted off on me, buty it still depresses and pops back up fine, but my handle slides all way down the stalk now the metal pice in the center of the handle in there busted out of the plastic body of the handle and that metal piece stops in the two grooves at the top end of the stalk

i lost the piece, i need to epoxy it back inside the handle somehow or other, hmmm

i have no idea what to use that will hold up and adhere to the rubber plastic of the handle

does anyone know ??

thanks

The Camaro has a differant type of round shifter.

The Firebird one looks better IMO.

You all say that the red arrow round top shifter was used only on the 200C but I have it on my 83 with a 700R4

its part of the button, theres no way that you dont have the two metal tangs and skinng plastic shaft part of the button, unless you really dont have a round type 82 83 shifter

good luck

I spent the last several months putting in a TH350 and using the 82 stock shifter.

I have a shifter **** and button from an older Pontiac. It was "leather" wrapped and had the red bird symbol on the button. The 82 shifters were plastic and beveled as has been mentioned and only had a Pontiac logo, no bird.

I still have the "leather" wrapped one as a spare that I don't need.

If your **** is broken and falls DOWN the shaft, it's not the little circlip under the button. It's two metal tangs on the side of the **** that are broken. I doubt you can fix them. Perhaps you could put a small setscrew UNDERNEATH the **** to hold it in place, but don't screw too deep or you'll stop the stem from actuating the shifter. Otherwise, find a new ****.

If your **** is broken and COMES OFF the shaft, then you're missing the circlip.

If your button does nothing and you can shift gears without depressing it it could be:
1. Missing the small metal tang ("J" shaped) at the bottom of the stem. It is held in place by a spring that easily breaks or falls off.
2. Just the spring is broken or missing.
3. Both the tang and spring are broken or missing.

It's very common for that to happen. I searched many junkyards and could not find either part. ALWAYS MISSING. It is NOT part of the button or plastic shaft attached to the button.

I had to buy a complete 82 shifter from a guy on the board just to get the metal "J" piece for my shifter. Had to search GM dealerships in Canada for the right spring (although you could just buy a generic spring of the same size).

it is a 3rd gen handle beveled one yes,

the tangs on the button are fine, its not the button thats messed

the metal ring that has the two tangs that sit in the two cuts in the very top of the shifter tube busted out of the handle inside of it in the middle,

i need ot just epoxy bond it back to inside the center of the shift handle

thats all

i need reccommendations on what will bond to this black plastic handle material 82 83 style

and thats it it will be all good to go, just need to figure out if mine was originally silver liek my steering wheel one is, or if it was indeed red, an 82 regular T/A, so i can find one of what its supposed to have so i can dump the second gen red bird one in it now

thanks
