Anybody who has a 82-83 Trans Am with the steering wheel that has the fake little torx screws around the horn button. Is there a chrome ring around the horn button and is the grip black or gray?

I just got a steering wheel from a standard '82 Firebird and the steering wheel has a chrome ring around the horn button and the grib is dyed gray to match the gray that the bottom of the console and parts of the dash usually is. This came out of a car with charcoal interior.

Looking at pics on here and the net it looks to me like the Trans Ams didn't get the chrome ring around the horn button and the grip is black.

looks alot better than the camaro wheel IMO..i might have to get one...

id buy one if i could find one in good (great) shape...

My first 1982 T/A had it, my second '82 T/A didn't.

My 1983 T/A doesn't have it and my other 1983 has the different wheel.

I heard only S/E's came with the little ring but I've seen S/E's without it and T/A's with it.

 

How about trim packages, My 83 T/A Steering wheel appears to be leather, as the paint/dye on the leather is starting to spider crack... And it does not have the black ring...

Here is what I found out from my 82-92 Firebird parts micro fiche ...

1983-84 RPO code W69(Firebird SE) cars got steering wheels with grips that matched the interior of the car. I originally thought this was only the case for steering wheels with the leather wrapped option but this also applies to the standard simulated leather rubber steering wheels. The steering wheels were morhided(dyed).

It looks like my steering wheel came from an SE as the grip is dyed a light gray. I took a little lacquer thinner to the grip and the dye comes off so I should be able to turn this into a black Trans Am steering wheel pretty easily.

 

my 82 t/a doesnt have chrome its all black like in first pic!

but foam is trashed missing alot of palces,

i need new wheel, i want stock factory black 82 t/a one for it

i dont want anything later than correct 82 trans am in or on the car anywhere except drivetrain related

i totally despise anyone who removes one in favor of a craphole grant wheel, or any other kind of wheel

THe thing I don't understand is the Grant wheels are so much smaller... I figure GM spent alot of time and energy trying to figure out the best diameter wheel for the feel they were trying to achieve. By going to a smaller wheel you exert more energy to turn the wheel, a matter of levers. I love the feel of my Formula and any extra effort would be tiring...

By the way, the Grant wheels come in different sizes. My Grant wheel's diameter is within 1 inch of the orginal wheel.

When I had my car painted in 96 ( 98 was incorrect) I had to replace the wheel. All of the dealers at that time wanted about $400 dollars for an OEM wheel.

I like the feel of my Grant wheel. It matchs the charactor of my 82 very well. Sorry I don't have a picture of the wheel. but heres is a picture of the car.

 

My '82 TA also has the chrome ring on the steering wheel...here is a pic.

 

smaller wheel would be quicker turnng but take more force to turn,

larger wheel would take more turning but be lots less effort force to turn than a smaller diameter one would

 

Huh? Sorry but unfortunately by getting a smaller steering wheel you do not increase your turning... For example a 1/4 turn is still a 1/4 turn on the wheel... However a smaller wheel will feel like the car is more "tight" But if you do like they do in NASCAR, you move the seat back for tracks that do not need alot of turning, and you move the seat closer to the wheel when you are going to be turning more.

I like my stock wheel, it fits the car... granted I have an 88 wheel on my 87.
