A few years ago here in Kitchener Waterloo Ontario I used to see a lot of third gens driving around.
Now I might see 2 or 3 a week and half of them are beat up V6 and will soon be in the junkjard.
If I go to small towns I tend to see more but most of those are in rough shape or chealpy moded up.
I figure in 3-5 years all the V6 and rough third gens will be gone and only the few good ones will be left. My .02.

There aren't that many where I'm at either. I might see the same 3-4 nice cars every week or so but they like mine are fair weather cars. There are a few cars in rough shape that drive around but there are not many.

I see about 3 or 4 of the same 3rd gens each day. All have some pretty heavy exterior mods though so none are really untouched. Theres a black iroc for sale in some parking lot near my school that must have been repainted or something because the iroc decal is only on one side...its also got a cowl hood. Then theres 2 kids at my school with like 91-92 RS's (one has a v6 and the other has a carbed 350)...both are missing some badging nad have tremendous cowl hoods and z28 spoilers and big chrome tips. Actually the v6 one is starting to look alright. And one of my friends has got an 85 bird thats kinda beat up.

I would also occasionaly see a nice burgendy iroc drive by during the summer. It was in really nice shape but it had louvers (looked uncharacteristicly bad on it), and a 91-92 z28 spoiler.

So basically i see the same few each day--some look decent, whereas others are kinda beat up. Every now and then i see one driving around that looks to be stock and/or in great condition. But thats once in a blue moon.

Rare, in that, you don't see many nice ones on the road anymore, especially around here, with winter, yes.

Rare in that you can't find one if you want one, no.

Well i mean i know these cars arnt 'rare'...they was in upwards of 2 million or more 3rd gens built...but there is no doubt that nice original examples are getting VERY hard to find. Depending on what your looking for and how much your willing to spend it could take awhile. For me personally we looked for about a year for basically just ANY low mileage (under 100k), original (read:no repaint, original engine), excellent condition, V8 fbody for around $4-$6k. We looked anywhere witin 150 miles and ended up finding mine at a new car dealer (yea it was so nice a FORD new car dealer had it on their front line) that my parents had purcahsed other new cars at.

In my area you don't see a lot of third gens, and when you do it seems there are more camaros than Firebirds. Most of them are kind of crappy looking probably due to the winters. Althought I did see a pretty sweet black GTA not too long ago! Looked like it was brand new. If it's an early third gen, it's basically rusted out, but I've seen some pretty beat up '91-92's also.

around where I live there are only Firebirds and Camaros left lurking the streetsand most are v6 cars. Even then I only see one or two every couple of weeks unless I look out in my back yard to look at the four Trans Ams I own. They are really hard to find here in Portsmouth it took me three years to find my first one

when you say its getting harder to find a nice original one, do you mean one that pretty much looks original and may have mods, or one that is all original. because mine is extremely clean for an 86 but nothing is original on it...but the only thing you notice is the rims (and the exhaust noise, but not tips)

The only comfort I have is in the first place 1 of 950 is rare. Given those 950 have been widdled down over the 14 years since, I'm feeling pretty good about not running into someone with a car like mine.

Ha.
