Slot cars are cool. I have the same Firebird along with a couple of Camaro's.
I put the decals on the Firebird so I could race it. We have an HO slot car club.

Ya, there is alot you can do to make the faster. We find that the Tyco's are fast enough. We mod the older AFX Magnatracs and race them because they are harder to drive.

Brings back memories of when the cars first were able to change lanes. Wasn't Tyco was it?

I have one of those tracks with the switching lanes. Yes they were made by Tyco. I had a few cars, but I have since dismantled them and lost most of the components to allow them to actually work (I was young when I got them).
Actually I had pretty good luck with them, I could get them to really fly. THere was a small rubber bushing that when it would spin it would push the steering to the ight or left, when you changed lanes the motor would spin the opposite direction, in effect turn the steering. THe differential would only run in one direction no matter which direction the motor was running, it was a neat setup, what would happen is there were 2 engaging gears, in the middle where the pinion was there was a small metal piece that would engage one gear or the other depending on which way it was spinning. Lots of fun happened when you would remove the rear gear and flip it over, they would go like crazy bakcwards too.
ahh to be young and have time to mess with useless crap. They say you learn 80% of what you know by the time your 5 or 6 years old. Its no wonder when you trun 5 they send you to school to learn what they want you to learn and by the time you get married there is just no more time to do anything but what is manditory.
WOW that was a tangent sorry.
