How many different types of iroc rims are there?

i think there are 3 or 4. there is the flat kind, and the kind that goes in with one big groove. then there is the kind with the smaller grooves within the spokes. are there two kinds of these or are they just different caps or what. i cant tell the difference.

maybe having them next to each other can help. i cant tell what the difference is, but i cant stand the second one and i love the first one. i am waiting for pictures of iroc rims locally, and i dont know which kind they will be. it is from a 1990 if it helps. i know they arent the flat kind.

the top one was available on 85-87 Iroc's, the bottom one was available on 88-90 Iroc's and there was also a 15" version of the second one that came on 88-90 Iroc's with the TBI engine.

I have a 1990 IROC with the 15 inch version of the two lines, so I don't think it was only the TBI IROC's. And wasn't TBI only offered in 88 IROC's then it was TPI only for 89-90?

The 15" IROC wheels & tires were stock 88-90 with the 16" ones being optional RPO N96 at $468 extra cost.

I definitely like the first kind better...did they come in 16 inch or just 15 inch? (for the 1st wheel, the one displayed by the red Iroc)
Also, what material is it made of?...Aluminum?

There were a total of 4 different wheel designs available on IROC-Zs over the years.

From 85-87 they all got the traditional 16" design:

In 88, a 15" wheel was standard. This looked like the wheel found on the 82-84 Z28s, and various year RS Camaros:

The 16" wheel was optional, and looked like this:

In 89, the standard wheel was once again a 15", but it looked just like the 16" version:

In 90, the 16" wheel was the only one available.

I would say that there are only 3 types of "IROC-Z" rims. 85-87, 88-90 and the 89 15incher. The other is just a regular Camaro rim that was used on very few IROCs. So really its not a IROC specific rim.

What you want to call it is up to you. It doesn't change the fact that it was available on the IROC.

I don't know the particulars of it, but I believe it was different from the 82-87 Z28 wheel in that it didn't have a machined surface on the spokes. I'm not sure about this until I look at some of my hi-res pics at home.

Ahh, maybe so... but they came with Iroc-Z centercaps! (I had them!)

I don't think you would see any difference.

Overall tire height will be the same.

Weight difference is minimal.

Driving habits could net a much greater gain.

Yeah what he said, I mean unless you go with some super heavy steel wheels and huge tires your not going to see much or any MPG change.

All IROC wheels are made of an aluminum alloy.

Difference in weight is going to be negligible as far as fuel economy is concerned.

Also this thread is 8 years old.

Like I said...there is going to be NO NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCE in mpg vs. the two wheels. If you're looking for better mpg, look elsewhere. Wheels are not your answer, unless you're comparing say a 14 inch steel wheel to a 26 inch solid chrome wheel.

Original question has been asked and answered. The new question should have had it's own thread, but it's been asked and answered now too.
