How to verify matching engine on an 89?

Can anyone tell me where to find the VIN number on an 89 L98? I would like to verify that the engine in this car is the one that it came with from the factory.

Thanks!

IIRC, it should be on the block's deck, on the passenger side, right in front of the cylinder head. It will be stamped into the machined surface.

Here is what your looking for, it shoudl be behind the AC bracket in 89 on the RH side of the engine.

What your looking for is the last 6 or 7 didgets of the VIN.

THe question I have is if you look at the VIn on the block its 2HN211943...

I am trying to figure out what the VIN of the car was. Is the first didget "2" the check didget, or does it designate Pontiac...

The HN211943 is prety self explanitory.

2 = Pontiac
H = 1987 model year
N = Norwood, OH factory
211943 = sequence number
