82 - 84 Firebirds
Pros- THey are less expensive typically to purchase than the later cars, especially 91-92. HO cars are probably the most desirable, the CFI cars are also desirable for the years. An LG4 chasis would make for a nice V8 starting point if you want to build a 350 and transplant it.

Cons - The 82 & 83 CFI was not the most reliable system from sources on this site, although there are several folks with good strong running CFI cars on the boards.. The LG4 was a real Dog, An I4 should stay in a Fiero, and the V6 was not really hot either.

Actually I feel that 3rd gens matured with age, and by the end in 1992 they had probably the best, most reliable cars. I did read that the Fit and finish of 82-86 cars is not as good as 87-92, I have looked at both but not sure why the statement was made.

THe most redeeming thing about the LG4 is the Insurance, its usually cheep for LG4 cars, and then you can put a buig ole 350 or 400 and no one is the wiser... and you cna still afford the insurance.

Actually there is not a whole lot of difference for insurance between LG4 and L98 cars, a little, but every bit helps.

My LB9 is about 20% more and my L98 is about 25% more for insurance. IIRC

Actually I'd say that an LG4 car that has a nice clean body would be a great buy. It's super simple to replace an LG4 with a 350. I look at an LG4 car as good base to start with. Carb 350 engines are cheap to buy, and the swap is easy. I'd avoid a V6 car, as engine swaps are far more difficult. I went through the V6 to V8 process with my 87, and it was a real pita.
