Axle/Gears: 3.27:1
2W87Z8N142241.......... breaks down as:

2 - Pontiac division, GM
W - Trans Am body series
87 - 2 dr. coupe
Z - 400 ci Pontiac engine (6.6L)
8 - Model Year (1978)
N - Norwood, OH assembly plant
142241 - Consecutive sequence number

As for what the car is, there was no "Hurst Trans Am" built in 1978. The specific codes as far as options and equipment will be stamped on the body tag under the hood at the bottom of the windshield on the LH side. There will be no "coded" mention of a special model in the VIN for 1978 models..... 1979-81 models are a different story.

Give more specific details about the car's appearance and what's printed on the body tag, and I may be able to help you out more.

From your description, that car has the "Hurst Hatch" T-tops in it. Those tops were factory from GM for 1977 and 1978; the 1978 cars got either Hurst or GM/Fisher tops..... installation of the type was at the factory's discretion.

The Hurst tops are much narrower, have a molding around the outside on top of the car, and have a broader band between them on the roof; they also do not extend to the rear of the door/glass joint like the GM/Fisher tops do. I had a 1981 T/A with Hurst tops installed after production..... and that car leaked like a sieve. You could not stop the water from coming in; nothing helped, resealing, adjusting, you name it, I tried it.....

All the T/As with 4-speeds in 1977-1981 had the Hurst shifter installed, so that is correct for the car.

For more information about your car go to the <A HREF="http://pub12.ezboard.com/b2ndgentransamforum"> 2nd Generation Firebird/TA Message Board</A>. There are a lot of educated folks there who know virtually everything about these cars, and are always willing to help. They always help me.....

Good luck!
