It's fully legit info wise, feel free to check out his site. I don't know who's database he tapping into though but don't ask, don't tell you know, lol. He's also an auto enthusiast and he posted this link on another car site.

Try and not use it often though, we don't want it to disappear!!! Also don't post this link on other boards because that more of a chance of it getting shutdown.

I felt a bit weird about it, too, but curiosity got me.

There are all these different categories, and you'll be told whether any info was found in each one. Stuff like liens on the title, accident info, flood damage reported etc. All I got was a partial chronology of the car's past...applications for title, state inspections etc. Not all that much, but still kind of neat.

Understood. Once I get the VIN for the TA I am buying, I'll run that, but then I'll be done.

It's almost identical to what you get in a Carfax report. The format is just a little different.I had just run Carfax's on my vehicles but I'm like you bull curiosity got the better of me.

For me it showed 1 history entry, and not what I originally expected.
So I tried Carfax, and it found 13 history entries, Carfax is still better, you just gotta pay.
Still a very interesting site though.

I ran my daily driver on that and it didnt show the accident I had w/ it. I wonder why. Besides that everything else it said was cool. I found some info on both my camaros.

It did for me. At least it was showing all of the times registered - displayed Toronto and Ottawa. I have run two of my cars so far and they both came up. However, on one of them, it isn't up to date, I know this because I wrote this car off in September and it shows no record of the Salvage Title.
Maybe it just takes a while for him to get new info...

Dang! You Canadians are everywhere on this forum now, lol.

It only shows accidents that are reported correctly under law. When I wrecked my Toyota a couple years ago I didn't report and so it won't show even though the car took $6K to repair...

Agreed. After running a couple VINS I have already run through CarFax, I found it seems to miss anything over about ten years ago.

Good for a free check, but not if you want to make 100% sure you're getting a good car before you lay down your hard-earned cash.

Oh, the database he is using would seem to be this one:

http://www.autocheck.com/

No idea how legal it is, though.

One thing I have noticed is it seems that the information is disapearing. For example, My 1st 87 Formula I have a printout from 2003 that goes back to 1988 when the car was originally purchased. Same goes with my #2 87 Formula, it goes back to 87 when the Loan started.

NOW, they only go back to 1995. The information is the same after that, but apparently there not keeping records, I wonder what will happen if they discard the old records with the Odometer readings....

Same here.

I ran my VIN on this link but I also have the original reports by carfax and autocheck. And guess what: they all have different entries. It's like putting a puzzle together...

Very odd. For me in reference to my GTA it was better detailed than the last CarFax on it. However all of the action has happened since I've owned it so 90% of the entires were in reguards to the last 6 years. It do go back to original purchase and had exactly what CarFax did at those points in time. Both only had 4 entires for milages and registration between 1992 and 1999.

Yeah really, lol. Atleast you know, not like it's a collector car and it matters. You bought the car because you like it right? So it shouldn't matter, be happy with your choice. With milage that high it doesn't really matter IMO. Unless you got defrauded out of like 100K miles, lol

Ok, I've got a question now. I just went and left a deposit on the '92 T/A I am buying, and I got the vin from it. I just ran the numbers with this free vin check, and it is coming up as a '92 Pontiac 5.7 Trans am GTA.

As far as I know, this car is just a T/A, so why is the VIN check showing it as a GTA? It doesn't have GTA badges...

The only true way to tell is to run the RPO codes.

Those are on that sticker on the door, right? I'll have to look at them next time I am down there, or when I finally have the car in my possession.

To be honest with you I have no idea where they are located on a 92. I know they are in several different places for different years, and let us know if it a GTA, maybe they didn't like the badges
Post a pic when you can and congrats

...on the 92 camaro's it is on the inside of the trunk glovebox lid (I believe.. could be wrong about that) I'd guess the same would go with Pontiac's.

It might be possible for you to take the last 8 of your Vin to your local gm dealership and ask for your rpo code at the parts dept and they'll print you out a sheet.I did this 2-3 years ago on a '91 trans am I almost bought and it worked.

Its also showing my no-option 1991 T/A as a Trans Am GTA; I think this is just an error by whoever wrote the VIN decoder, sorta how my 2002 T/A WS6 shows up on my title and insurance as a Formula.

It is probably in reference that the car could be either a Trans AM OR a GTA. Which there is no difference in the VIN to specify either except in 87-89 only the Trans AM could have been gotten with an LO3 but not the GTA.

Is it sort of like how later Camaros show up as a "Coupe" because there are no letters in the VIN to identify SC/LT/Z28/IROC?

Hmm...appears my car has been auctioned 4 times, the first time being only six months after the car was purchased new. Title is clear, no accidents except for one recent one that I already knew about, but the auction thing kinda scares me...aren't auctioned cars usually full of serious problems?

Not always. Could just be neglegent owners. Are there a lot of liens/repos on it?

Wow! No I never ran the 91's VIN. I only ever went to PHS for the RPO's since it was already in such poor condition at the time.

I used it this morning on a car for a friend, a 1999 Olds Aurora, and it worked perfect.

I need to find the VIN from my old Firebird. Definetly need to track it down and convince the current owner that I need it back Even if it is a 2.8 auto
