I thought that this would probably be the best place to post this topic, since it is concerning the history of our cars.
I just got my copy of GM HighTech Performance in the mail today. Anyone else seen this issue yet?
It kind of makes you feel like you just lost your bestfriend, the F-Body. Honestly, I questioned myself as to why I continue to give my money and loyalty to GM when it "almost" seems as if that same commitment to its loyal customers is non existent.
I really liked the Real-World RamJet Camaro though. Very Nice.

i hear yea man. granted i own a second gen but i love the fourth gen TAs and support GM i honestly dont think they will completly do away with them all together maybe take them away for a year or two. but what reall gets me is in the feb car craft they show what GM is bringing to SEMA and man those cars are great. they have a 428SD in a new trans am a 302 in a new z28 an SS silverrado with the 6.6 engine and corvettes IRS, and a LS1 in a two door grand prix AWD and a 300hp regal. these cars were great why they wont build them i dont know but man they have the brains and know how i guess they are too chicken. whatever they are going to do is still uncertain and we wont know until they do it.TINFY

lol GM isnt that stupid. I mean sales arent even bad. Hell cops drive them. And plus 35 years of the maro and bird...they will never let mustang and ford win the battle. Remember thats what the fbody is all about.

I think a bigger problem is the overall direction GM is going and its damn fugly styling. I just got a 2001 GM calendar with "concept" cars that may end up in production.

They have a Pontiac Rageous which very much be their replacement for the F-body. It looks like it is based on the Sunfire chassis and does not have a V8 (and probably not RWD).

I do like the Chev SRR that bares resemblence to a 50s Chev Truck, but its not a truck. If does have 2 seats and supposedly can have various panels that can be removed aka Chrysler PT Crusier.

I was given the impression that you can make it a 2 seater, possibly a 2+2 and a small box truck. You can have a couple of different vehicles...depending on what you need. If it has an LS1 and RWD, I would buy it.

Also, the Buick LaCrosse (front styled similar to a 53 Buick) looks really nice if you are into 4 doors. Probably with a 3.8 Supercharged eninge. Why screw with something that is working.

I dont get this...I mean GM is getting rid of the fbody...Thats stupid right there but then they might replace it with a FWD car?! How stupid is that? If they are worried about sales do they think by killing one of the LAST muscle cars around that they will make sales go up?? WTF, that is stupid!

Yes the heritage of the f-bodies is undeniable, yet it make me wonder what they will do since the plug will be pulled. Just look at what happened to buick with its history of the "GNX" title. Not that the new SC Regals are that bad, but its a totally different direction from its predecessors. Does anyone know of any turbo regal fans that are flocking to these? I don't. I hope your right Monkie when you say that they are smarter than that, but it seems that if you look at GM's current trend, save for the ultr-expensive vette, all of its performance cars are front-wheel drive, supercharged V6's. I cant speak for everyone, but you can make mine a 8!

I can understand the killing of the F-body. Its not competitive in the market, there is so much built with more quality for the price. Admit it, it is over-priced. And no one is buying them and most of are included. We are the third gen men/women, not the fourth gen. In the 80's they sold upwards of 150,000 camaros/firebirds a year and now they can't sell 40,000.

Having spirit for the F-body and GM making money on a product are two totally different things. GM has to make money, that's why their in business. They have finally decided the F-body isn't competitive and people that want these cars generally can't afford new ones (except the reasonable priced V-6 coupe).

May GM have mercy on their soles as they kill the cars so many love When they ressurect it, I hope it is the greatest thing next to the Vette.

Yea, but, (maybe i'm wrong here) if i was in charge up keeping track of sales, etc. And my sales were worse with the fourthgen's compared to how they were with the third's. I think i'd take a look back to the third's and see what was different, and try to go with that kind of concept, rather than trying to build space age stuff (sorry but thats just was some of these cars/trucks look like) that everyone else is doing, i'd try and go with my own concept and be different.

I swear if they would just lower prices some they would sell more. I mean 30 grand for a SS, thats crazy! And then 3 grand more for that stupid SLP performance option. Its not worth it. And the people that have that kind of money just go all out and buy the Corvette!

i agree with monkie and anyone else who says the price is too much. it is. i mean look at how much a GT stang costs and you can get it stripped down if you want. i have yet to see a stripped down TA or Z. not every one wants luxury with their power i for one dont like leather and dont want a sports car with it if i can get it that way. i am sorry but for the price a new stang is better than a Z or TA and thats is what a lot of other people think too thats why ford is winning. i just know change is needed and i hope it is change for the better and not something stupid like killing or dishonoring the heritage of the f body. i will never own a fwd f body if it is made. That just pisses me off. A FWD fbody...Why dont they just put a 4 cylinder in them while they're at it?

They did that already, the old iron duke. they also made a wagon version in the 70s Camaros and the 80s GTAs. Thankfully, they never made production, although the GTAs looked pretty cool, nothing like having a 350cu. in. grocery hauler.

Please don't take offense.

GM should consider bringing back a modernized version of the 231 Turbo Buick GN engine for a more affordable 5th gen F-body. I wouldn't mind if the top optioned SS or WS6 TA would be fitted with such an engine. If that's what it would take to save the F-body, while still remaining RWD, then let it be. I'm darn sure most agree that the 89 TTA is one heck of a car stock! The concept of the 89 Turbo TA may be the key and could very well be the savior of the whole Fbody lineup.

I was talking with a finance manager at a local pontiac dealer and he told me that he average income of a Trans Am owner was like around 60 grand. I couldnt believe it and I still dont.I guess that partially explains why almost every T/A and Z that we see have leather and just aboout every other option available. Stock. I bought my 97 off the showroom floor, and it was equipped the same (and I wanted cloth).
Im guessing that the "upper level" versions were targeted at those who wanted vette like anemnities but couldnt afford the vette. The stripped down version of the T/A should be the formula, which im sure you already know, but even those can be found loaded to the hilt. Maybe Im in the minority on this, but I dont think that 30,000.00 is too much to spend for a fully loaded Ram Air or SS. I mean look at what these cars offer then look at what other cars in its category offer. Asian and european car fans might argue some trivial point about their cars, but to touch one of these f-bodies, they would have to pay +40,000.00 (Turbo Supra, 300ZX, Skyline not to include its additional taxes). Just look at what the 3rd Gen fikehawk cost. Compare that to the current car and its performance(Ram Air LS1) and it doesnt seem that bad. At least not to me.

With GM killing the last of the RWD Cars we have to thank god for ford.... I could get crown vic, mustang, lincon LS, they seat at least 4 have RWD and have 8 cylinders. I know one thing though I will NEVER buy any of gm's front wheel drive junk! Oh yea the GM $50,000 corvette RWD.... (had 4 of them 1981 1986 1991,1993) Not worth asking price. Would rather own lexus or BMW at least I could use the car.

I guess I'm also partly responsible for the f-body demise by casting my vote with my money. Since I just bought a GM product Sat.
I looked at a red Z28 SS at the dealership... walked right past it and bought a tohoe.

I now own 2001 tohoe

Seriously, I might be a part of that equation also. When the LS1's debuted, I must admit that being an LT1 owner I had my biases. When the opportunity came for me to purchase a Ram Air, I held out because of those same reasons. I dont regret not getting one, but with the plugged being pulled and all I cant help but feel at a lose. Now if GM hadnt cancelled the LS6'ed f-body...

Eddie you have a good point about using the turbo six. i would buy a f body with one of those but there is a problem. cost look at how much the GNs and TTA cost even back then they were way up there i believe the asking price of a TTA was something close to 30 grand and that was 89. if they could produce it cheaply is say go for it but the LS1 and LS6 i am sure can be built for less.

GhstRydr you are right. for the price the f body is a bargin but you can not get a TA without leather and loaded and i am sure the Z is the same way. if they would offer them striped down then i am sure they would sell more. just like in the old days when they first came out you could get a stripped down Z or TA for next to nothing now you are forced to buy it with leather and a host of luxury options that drive up the cost and drive away those that want the car but dont want the luxury options. when did GM say they cancled the LS6 in the F body i thought they were putting them in the 2002 models?TINFY

TIFNY,

According to the last copy of GM Hightech Performance, the word was that the LS6 in the f-body was to expensive to bring about. I cant be specific right now because I left the copy at work (got to past the time somehow). The name and position of the guy from GM who passed that peice of bad news was mentioned. Maybe someone else has that copy and can remember who he was and exactly what he was quoted as saying. If not, I'll post it tomorrow.

Read the newest editon of caranddriver. The editors there that hate U.S. cars completly agreed that the SS is the best bang for your buck car made. The rason that the rustang iswinning is b/c of its looks and affordiabilty (misspelled). Also f**d backs them up better then GM. How muchdo stangs cost anyway?

That's vs. Lamborginis, Ferraris, Vettes, BMWs, Vipers and other cars that are totally outrageously priced.

No way in hell am I ever going to pay 30+ grand for a car that has no resale value and contains ancient techniques and technology. I love the way the SS looks, but for the common previous owner(s) of Camaros, its out of their budgets.

I know how respected Car and Driver and Motor Trend and other magazines, but they are too spoiled by the over-priced american and foreign cars and consider 30 grand reasonable. In my world, paying 30 grand on a car is a poor investment of so much money.

You can get a formula for around that price (22,000). After dealer mark up, tell me what the price would be for a mustang GT then. Besides, if you want to compare a mustang to a SS or RamAir, you would have to go with the Cobra and they are way over 30 grand. I'm suprised no one mentioned this yet. Not to long ago I looked at a brand new fully loaded stang, at a dealership not online, just to see some of the pricing. Guess what, damn near $28,000.00. Comparable to a Z or T/A (Price not performance).

The price posted is for a fully loaded mustang GT leather, upgraded sound system, upgraded rims and tires, your not getting a loaded formula for that money because there called transams and cost 28,000
