85 MPH. They were all 85 MPH until about 86 or 87, I think... Then it was an option. I think all 87+ 350 cars got the 140 MPH speedo, but I am not sure.

In 1986 there was a second design speedo head that showed 145 mph. According to my archives I have both Z28's and IROC's with this speedo head and one of the Z28's is an LG4 car. It looks like it was phased into the latter half of 1986 production.

I believe that the 82 used the same dual-needle setup that the 83-84 used. It went to 85mph, and had another needle facing the opposite direction and had corresponding kph instrumentation on the other side of the gauge. I thought it was sorta neet.

NO NO NO. I have a 82 Z28 and it has the 140 mph gauge. Try looking the a classic industries book. But anyway mine goes about 240 now. hehe If it has the 85 or whatever then its not a Z28. Maybe a Sport coupe

82-85's had 85 mph, and then in 86 they switched to 145. There was some government regulation or something that made it illegal to have a speedo that went higher than 85. If your car is in that first 82-85 series, then it has to be non-original. This regulation was for all companies too, if memory serves.

As has been said the 82 Z would have had the dual needle spedometer... There were several different guage clusters around from 82-92. At least 5 different spedometers that I can remember seeing. Wasn't 85 the first year for the 140mph?

No. Late 86 first brought about the 145 speedo, at least in Camaros. I dunno about the Firebirds but I assume it was similar in time frame.
