Anyone happen to catch the 1991 Z28 go for $40k?

It was a red 1LE 305/auto with 78 original miles...looks amazing. Was getting lots of compliments by all the judges. Just thought it was kinda cool only ever see 1-2 third gens on this auction.

I was just curious why it didnt have side moldings? Was that part of the 1LE package?

 

I flipped out when that car rolled up on the stage! Claimed it only had 78 miles on the odometer. And to think my insurance agent questioned whether third gen F bodies of any type would appreciate in value!

Buy the way i cant believe 305 auto will go for that much. Imagine a 305 5 speed or L98 would go for. Also its funny that a 88 Callaway Corvette (twin turbo L98) went for the same thing as a thirdgen Lb9

Its not the combo that counts, it's the title and mileage.

wow i just saw that too...the rear emblem says 5.7 tuned port injection...this may have been a mess up cause it was advertised 5.0...wonder if the VIN has the 8th digit 8...

 

it was a mix up i contacted barrett-jackson and it is indeed a 350 A4. beautiful car by the way the paint was amazing for factory paint. and 40k wow!

 

Ya it is a 5.7L beacuse they said it has 245 hp. Plus it says it on the back. Sweet car no matter what it is though.

 

Let us know what the ZL-1 Camaro goes for, and what corvette number 003 goes for.

 

Yea i know its 1Le. They made 478 in 91. They made only 4 in 1988! They always been rare. But still a Callaway vette is rare and has twin turbo L98.. I would think the vette would still be more at the BJ auction.. Hell the announcers on the Barret Jackson said that if they took the hood off and the rims it would look like a reg 7,000 dollar c4 Still, i wonder why it would go that much. Even if its a 1le.. Thats good though

 

I have a 92 Camaro Z one owner with 20 some thousand miles on odometer. Uncle bougth for girl friend back in 92, got caught now sets in one of my building

WOW now that is a rare option, I've never heard of a 5.7L 305! HAHA When I saw that I was like... .......One of those cheeky british cats must have entered in it's info, cuz any decent American knows the chevy liter/cubic inch sizes. OK, ok 1LE's are rare, B4C's are rare (and I reallllly want one) but 40K for a third gen? But then again it is an auction so the price is higher than just buyer-2-seller asking price. Dadgum, I'd LOVE to have a B4C. But I would never pay 40K. As a matter of fact, I would never buy one with those miles......I want to be able to drive what ever I have, hit 110 on I-20 like I did today, and not feel guilty about miles. I'm trying to talk dad into a local B4C 4th gen.

 

I work for a dealership (Sam Pierce Chevrolet) and Sam Pierce actually bought rhw 91 1LE at the Barrett Jackson auction. He will have it in the show room soon...so I'll get some pictures whenever we get it. He collects and sells alot of old muscle cars...with very low miles. Hold on, Hold on. You mean your a camaro guy and you get paid to work on cars like that. I mean WOW a ZL-1 that thing is the fastest camaro ever built, the biggest dog of all time. And someone pays you to work on it. If you ever decide to quit let me know and I'll have my application in that day.

We just received the 1LE today and geeez......that thing is nice. It has 83 miles on it...it still has plastic on the floor mats. It's practically brand new. I'll try to get some pictures of it for you guys tomorrow.

 

id **** myself if i sat in either of those cars...'69 ZL1...*** damn what a piece of history. Also a now 83 mile third gen 1LE...id be in such heaven. Id love to drive my car brand new and feel it...

no, the barrett-jackson car had 78 miles. if i remember correctly sickness91z28 had access to the car. so id assume its still in indiana. unless someone put a hell of a lot of miles on it and is now sellin it in florida. guess it could b possible, but y would u.

Your right, it now has 83 miles on it. We recently sold the 91 Z28 1LE about 1 month ago and got $50,000 out of it.

We are working on getting another 91 Z28 1LE, Black, with only 6 miles! Yes...I said six!

My IROC is badged 5.7 but the VIN says 5.0. I was told that some over zeolous car dealers rebadged before the were first sold, I'm not sure if that's true.

 

Too bad I can't undo 57000 miles of driving on my 91 1LE/R7U. Then it would be worth some serious coin! LOL

 

And some of you wonder why I don't put any miles on some of these cars I collect Unlike the Cuda's and ZL1's of old, one of the few differentiators in the late model musclecars is mileage and original perfection.

Many ultra low mileage cars pass hands behind the scenes, collector-to-collector. You don't see many at auctions (yet!), and you don't see them getting top dollar on eBay or other internet sites.

My '85 IROC has 3,800 miles (which is a tad high for a less desirable LG4 car). My '89 TTA has 1,206 miles. The lowest mileage original I own is my '82 Corvette Collectors Edition. It's a car that sold new for over $24K back in 1982, and they made too many of them - Over 6,000.

But I turn down $40K for that car more often than people might realize. Maybe it will look stupid someday if the bottom drops, but I've always noticed that the ultra-low miles perfect originals can usually weather downturns, even severe ones.

Mike, you couldn't have said it any better.

Thats why I am saving to get a low mileage car. Not as low as yours, but somewhere around the 15-20k mile range. Something where I can drive it on nice days, and enjoy it, but still having a car that will for the most part retain its value. I saw a black 91 1LE with 80 miles on it at Carlisle two years ago. I have pics if you wish. Still had the bags on the seats and carpet covers. I'm not sure about guage covers. They were asking $21k if i remember correctly. It was about 10 spaces away from a 14k mile 85 berly. Completely mint with tele-guages.

 

Red, timing is everything - Much like the stock market really, but the cars are a little more predictable. That 1LE (if it still has 100 miles or so on it) would sell for $30K today without breaking a sweat. So you pick it up 2 years back at $20K, you get to own a cool car, and you sell it at a 50% increase 2 years later. I've been offered 25-30% premiums on the GM cars I own ... And I bought them all this year.

Why now? Because these cars are due. The original musclecars have gotten so high that only people with real FU money can afford them. That generation is buying them for the most part. Whenever anything gets out of range of anyone barring the top 5-10% of collectors, something else comes along to take its place. It's always been that way.

The next things are the popular cars from the following generations. Have you seen how easy it is to sell a low-mileage '79 Z28 or '79 Trans Am for over $20K these days? The IROC's have to be next, because they are better cars with more history. And the TTA - I really think they will achieve near-GNX levels. They likely won't get that high, but they'll nip at it.

Low mileage will hold value. Ultra low mileage will appreciate nicely from here. That is if you can resist the urge to drive them :-)

I wish I could have bought that 1LE that I saw. But not too many banks would give a 17 year old(at the time) a $21k loan. lol. I've been keeping an eye on the market, and I realized I might be a little too late into the game. By the time I can afford a lower mileage car(about 2 years when I'm out of college) I'm expecting their prices to increase considerably.

I was out to Hershey two weeks ago to the AACA Museum's Swap Meet/Auto Sale and there was a 20k mile 1987 Iroc with a TPI 5/speed, with the nicest leather interiors I think I have ever seen. There was not a wrinkle in the leather in any of the seats. The wierd thing was that it didn't have the G92 package or rear disks for that matter. I guess its kinda like your 85 only having the LG4.

I know all about waiting for the right car though. I've been waiting for 2 years, and I have 2 more to go.

You make some very good points which I agree with. I have been into T/As for 28 years. Originally I was willing to restore cars, but found I did not have the time anymore. Now I am only interested in low mileage originals.

I take both my TTA's out to car shows and anjoy talking to people about them. The price on the TTA's seemed to bottom out about 4-6 years ago. At the time when I bought my Festival Car I could have bought a 70 mile Leather/T-Top TTA instead. The price was 22,900, which is a very decent price, but I wanted to be able to drive the car a little bit. So I bought my Festival car instead with 4730 miles on it and paid 7K less for it. I am sure it will not be worth quite as much, but I will enjoy it just the same.

I hope you are right about the value of the TTA's in the future.

Yeah, getting loans as a teenager sucks - But just think, someday you'll be an old man like me and have a little cash to throw around (If you work your a$$ off in a high-demand field at least...)

Dave, I'm probably a bit too optimistic on future TTA values - But they will go up nicely even if they never see GNX levels. I can definitely understand the desire to drive these things - They are AWESOME cars. I love the IROC too, and it not having the TPI kept the price lower (as it will also do in the future).

The Vette, I kind of wish I had that one to do over again. I paid too much for it, and at best could make 15-20% someday. But I love looking at that car - It reminds me of when my biggest worry in life was wondering if I'd meet someone I know when I was sneaking into the drugstore to buy condoms

 

I suppose the difference between posters in this thread is how you view the ownership of vehicles. If they are art work investments then you park them and look at them and they appreciate in value ( if you picked art that others like and you don't acccidently stick your elbow through a window ala Steve Wynn).

If on the other hand they are a "toy" the same as a motorcycle, snowmobile or whatever then you use it, enjoy it and if it retains or increases in value then so much the better.

Steve, you're exactly right. I actually do both - Cars that I buy more as artwork/investments are very fun in their own way to me, and I've also had (and still do) cars that are ones I just like to drive ... and occasional race.

My '68 GTO convertible was missing its original drivetrain, so it did regular street duty with its 500+ hp 455 Pontiac mill. My '01 Formula was just to fun NOT to drive after putting the ATI supercharger on it, and I put nearly 20K miles on that thing in two years. The SRT-10 Viper-powered pickup is great fun, and has depreciated faster than any vehicle I've ever owned. And the '04 GTO is just a fun car, even if it isn't worth squat.

So it isn't as if I don't have other things I can drive, which definitely makes not driving the super low-mileage cars that much easier. I've finally worked hard enough to have a little extra cash to goof with, so I'm going to enjoy it while it lasts. We all enjoy cars in different ways, or in some cases multiple ways.

Car values can swing about as fast as you can blink.
The 79 TA Silver 10th Anniversary cars are selling well along with any low mileage 20th anniversary TTA.

I have a 9k mile 89 in new condition. I enjoy the car. I can't imagine 80 miles. WTF...why buy in the first place.
Let's be real very few if any people think I'll sell this in 15 years. 40-50k for a 91 is just stupid. 1LE didn't mean a whole hell of a lot in 91, could easily make mine one with a few parts. But then there is a lot of stupid people with a lot of money to throw around, see CUDAS that go for 500k-1mill easy. Seriously guys these kind of prices are stupid.
