My Convertible hatch release don't work.

i posted this in the electronics but got no reply's, and since this is like the convertible board i'll post it here. the power button don't release the hatch. it doesn't do nothing. i don't think it's the switch cause i took the trunk release button out my 89rs and tried it and it still didn't work. anyone have any ideas why? it never worked since i got the car in nov last year.

Just use the manual pulls behind the rear seats to release it. Look at the release mechanisms and see if anything is bent or disconnected.

Another possibility is the connection was cut somewhere along the way.

I've never experienced a problem like that so I'm kinda pulling ideas off the top of my head. Willie is the best source for vert info that I've met here.

thank you 89ragtop. another thing i forgot to mention was that when i put the top down, or up at that, the passenger side doesn't catch at all. could it be that the catch is bad on that side and causing that switch not to work right? thanks again.

My 89RS with electric trunk pull down had a similar problem. There is a ground wire coming from the trunk pull down to the release switch. So the cover will not lift if the trunk lid is up. My ground had come loose back at the trunk pull down.

Are your bows bent? Mine are and it makes it very difficult to put the top up or down properly. Most likely its that.

If the catch is bent out of shape, it won't release with the weak power of the release inside the console. You need to put more muscle to release, like in the manual release.

I would follow Rob P's suggestion first and check out the ground attached to the rear pull down motor. I had the same problem after I got mine painted and they didn't replace the ground wire. The switch wouldn't do anything, not even a spark. So if you're not getting even a clicking noise, check the wiring.

I had the exact same problem and I pulled out the switch and cleaned all the dust out of it. The dust in the switch maybe stopped the connection. It seems to work okay now.

most people have problems with the tonneau cover not coming up because something is bent, but if you aren't getting even a click from your switch, it is a wiring problem or bad switch.

ok, update. i found out why my passenger side wasn't catching. the release lever and cable were stuck all the way to the release position. now, it is still stuck. the cable going into the black tube won't move. like how the tube is connceted to that bracket to keep it from moving so just the cable itself moves in and out. well the cable wont move unless the black cable moves with it. i also noticed that the metal looking tube things on both sides that the wire goes to are rusted. could they be bad or not working? i still am not even getting a clicking noise, nothing.

Another two areas to look into. On automatic equipped cars the shifter must be in Park or Neutral for the tonneau to release. If it works in Neutral, but not in Park, tnhen the netral safety switch may need to be adjusted. On T5 eqipped cars the parking brake must be engaged. There is a ground wire going from the tonneau release switch to the parking brake. Good luck, Lon.
