VIN #'s on a '91 Bird

VIN say's, "F=Firebird", but decals has Formula all over, (clear coat & decals seem match the fading/peeling process too much), 140 on the speed-o, & muffler shop says I've got the GTA exhaust, dual cat's, so, what do I have,.....beside the 305, baby 8?
Thanks

Well, if you have a formula, you should have:

1) Wrap around spoiler
2) No ground effects - but with FORMULA written in its place
3) 16x8 Formula wheels w/ WS6 center caps
4) Power bulge hood
5) Only parking lights - no fogs (I think).

Also, what engine do you have, TBI or TPI? I think TBI was the base option, but most formulas will have the tuned port setup.

Please post your vin so we can tell you what engine. If you have a dual converter exhaust, it should have the 350 tpi or the HO LB9 305.

Hey Pat, what's up? You'll never believe this, but I ditched my V6 and am picking up a Formula 350. I saw your website, and the minute I saw the car I was like DUDE!!!

Ahem, on to tech. Now being a Formula fanatic, I can tell you the dual cats were NOT a GTA option. They were actually standard on the L98 (350 TPI) some years, and were an option on the TPI 305's for a few, so your exhaust shop are morons.

Also, 140 speedo was a standard on Formulas, along with all the cosmetic stuff Pat (black bird) mentioned. Also, all Formulas came with Ws6 suspension, so there should be a little tag on your passenger side dash that says "Performance Suspension," not all GTA's and TA's came with that.

And to solve your main query cause, the "Formula" is actually, at the nitty gritty base level, an option package for the Firebird, so the VIN will say Firebird.

Hope this clears it up.

Reno,
Congrats on the 350! I guess I'll have to do some more mods to try and match that stock HP rating of yours . Are you still going with the RA Hood? Enjoy the power .

Not so... All GTA's have WS6... Also the badge was included on all cars with F41 and FE2... WS6 included FE2... Therefore the "performance suspension" badge only indicated a suspension heavier than FE1 and was available on everythign from base models to Trans Am's.

Also to address the earlier statement mentioning "formula wheels" this is accurate only for 88-92 as 87 Formula's shared the same convex 16" wheel as the Trans Am.

PS, take your VIN to a pontiac dealer and get the RPO's... if its a Formula it'll have W66...

Pat: Nah, keeping the bone stock aggressive Formula look.

As for the suspension tag, that surprises me, I could have sworn T/A's GTA's only came with Level II suspension, Level III (WS6) as an option.

Brewer: H.O. means high output, which basically means TPI, as opposed to TBI. Another thing, if it's a formula with the 305 TPI, it should say "Formula" on the doors (NOT Formula 350), and "5.0 High Output" on the side of the power bulge (but blank there if it's a 350 or TBI).

EDIT: I just noticed it was a 91, shouldn't have anyhting on the doors, and power bulge will say "5.0-" or "5.7 High Output."

Get it? Got it? Good.

Wrong again... 91-92 Formula's all read "FORMULA" only on the door... 305 or 350 both used "FORMULA", as the 350 was dropped. Also the Formula lettering changed in 91 from the outlined letters to block letters fading from dark to light top to bottom.

Also the hood bulge lettering remained the same as earlier years with 5.0 Liter FI for L03's and LB9's, and 5.7 Liter FI for L98's.

Keep researching Reno, someday you'll figure it out.

"Formula", dark-to-light on doors, 5.0 FI on bulge,...
Right on all, lest I know what to call it now & what I've got to work with.

Wrong again. All GTA's came with WS6! When you bought a GTA you didn't have to option up to anything. In fact, you had to option down for some items. I'm with Drew. You need to do some more research before you go spouting off and telling people the wrong info.
