Square vs. Round Shift ****

I'm taking a survey of what year's Camaros came with which ****. I know the answer, but I know a fellow 1987 IROC-Z owner who's been told a reputed "heavy-duty" 700R4 got the square **** and all others have the round. So let's hear it from everyone with a 700R4. Please state your year, model (Sport Coupe, RS, Z28, IROC-Z) and whether you have a round or square ****.

Aside the matter at hand, I know the leather-wrapped **** (be it round or square) came only on the Z28/IROC-Z, so you don't have to state which you have. Thanks a bunch guys!

So far everyone is in line with the correct answer, which I won't tell.... yet.

Any more '87 owners out there? And where are all the '88 owners???

I was under the impression that 87s got the square ***** which would jive with an 87 that I once test drove (square).

My 86 originally had the round ****.

The round **** was used until 86, then the square **** was used from 87-92. The engine and trans has nothing to do with it.

Well, the '88 IROC I just purchased has a square style leather wrapped handle. I have heard it is supposed to have the square one, but I know '86s not '88s, so I don't have a clue for sure.

Thanks guys. The answer is 1986 was the last year for the round ****. All 1987 and newer Camaros got the square ****. I already knew this, but this informal survey confirms this. I'm going to close with thread with my automatic Camaros I've owned:

1984 Sport Coupe (V6) - Round
1984 Z28 (LG4) - Round
1986 Z28 (LB9) - Round
1987 Z28 Convertible (LG4) - Square
1987 IROC-Z Convertible (LG4) - Square
1987 IROC-Z Coupe (L98) - Square
1987 IROC-Z Coupe (LB9) - Square (my current ride)

Thanks again!

Willie
