Technically I believe Classic status takes about 30 years or so. I think antique is like pre-war.

In the antique business, an antique is over 100 years old, and classic is usually 50-100 years old. But when it comes to cars, those rules don't apply. Like trying to nail down exactly what a musclecar is or isn't, trying to define what years are classic and antique can vary depending on who you ask. Personally I'd use either 25 or 30 for a classic, and 50 for an antique. But then again is a Buick GNX or Pontiac TTA a classic now because of their rarness and desirability?

My insurance guy who works primarily on classic and antique cars says PA recognizes classics at 15 years old. This only entitles you to a small insurance drop. Antique is 20 and up but the car must be in relatively stock condition and can't be driven in any weather other than ideal. This is a huge drop in insurance but the limitations are very large.

I BELIEVE IN ILLINOIS ANTIQUE PLATES CAN BE BOUGHT AT 20 YEARS BUT YOU CAN ONLY DRIVE THE CAR 500 MILES A YEAR. NEEDLEES TO SAY YOU NEVER SEE ANY GENERATION CAMARO IN ILLINOIS WITH THESE PLATES. EVERYONE JUST PUTS VANITY'S ON AND WAITS FOR THEM TO STOP MAKING CAMAROS AND THEN WE WILL SEE WHAT A CLASSIC OR ANTIQUE IS OR WILL BE.

If you want classis license plates in NJ the your car has to be at least 25 years old.
I just made it with my other car which is a 1976 Jaguar XJS.

I had a 69 Camaro in 89 and it was considered a classic back than. I'd say 20 years is the rule of thumb. It also depends on the car. A 4 door 88 Buick LaSabre and it's GM clones will not be a classic when it hits 20.
Each year there are more people on earth, and more cars get made. Cars live longer so I think Classic status will be hardeer to achieve as time goes by.
