1LE Confusion

Someone mentioned about a 1989 Camaro IROC-Z WITH G91 and A/C being a possible 1LE. I thought no at first until I looked up some resources.. And according to them:

1LE was automatically triggered when you had an IROC-Z Coupe (1989) with the G92 performance axle ordered. If AC was ordered: then it would be classified as [STREET]. If AC was NOT ordered, then it was be classified as [RACE] and many weight saving options, etc were introduced.

Now to me this confuses me.

Since G92 was only available to IROC-Z Coupes, then that sounds like all it's saying is that if your IROC-Z coupe was ordered with the G92 package, it automatically triggered 1LE (Being there were a Street and a Race version).

That obviously CANNOT be right.. What am I missing? Thanks

id assume if its a true 1le then it may have dealer installed ac anyone that was smart back in the day would have done so being that the new installed ac would be identical to the factory parts

Thing is, all that I see is indicating that you just needed a IROC-Z Coupe ordered with G92 and it automatically triggered 1LE (what parts were given with the 1LE code depended on whether or not you had AC or not)..

But that CAN'T be true! I can't see how it can.. Lots of IROC-Z coupes have G92. can't tell me they are all classified as 1LE.. 1LE to me is without AC..

there not as they will not have 1LE listed on rpo codes if ac was ordered they have g92 but not the 1le code that is the differance
g92 with ac was just good rearend gearing at that point

That's exactly what I thought.. I'm reading it "automatically triggered 1LE when G92 was ordered".. 1LE shouldn't even be IN the G92 paragraph then.. But everything I read says this..

Much of the 1LE ordering story is just that, a story. I am doubtful that anything was triggered.

Certainly in 89, most of the 1LE cars headed north to Canada for the Player's series. 74 of the 111 if I recall. None of them had A/C. There was 2 other sent ot Canada that were not Player's cars.

I don't see why GM would not have made an A/C 1LE car. Some exec in 1989 might have wanted all the toys. OR it might have been a prototype police car.

I have personally seen a 1991 Trans Am 1LE with T-tops. Verified the VIN and RPO codes too. Not suppose to happen, but there it was.

I ordered a '89 IROC 1LE when I lived in Germany. I recall having to order the B2L, having to specify AC Delete, and I even made mine a stripe delete. It was an awesome car on the autobahn once I found an underdrive alternator pulley!

My TTA has AC.

Its a 1LE too.

I just do that to stir the pot.

Pretty much anything that wasnt "supposed" to be available with 1LE has pretty much been proven wrong.

From AC, to leather to T-tops, another myth debunked

THere was a legit Players car from either 1989 or 1990 that had the 1LE, A/C, T-tops LB9/MM5 completely loaded about a year ago on e-bay. he had the order sheet, the SPID tag & everything IIRC listed.

For the most part, 1LEs were bare bones, no radio, no AC, no power windows, no power locks, no leather options, all race...

BUT there are some cars that you may consider COPO that were specially made for one reason or another... Its also possible that someone walked it down the line picked the options they wanted... thats really more common than you know.

In 1989, 74 of the 111 1LE camaros were Player's cars and all came with power windows, locks, mirrors, stereo. 66% of the cars in 1989. As 1LE numbers increased, the percentage probably went the other way. 1991 being a two year production run has about 1/5th of the cars being players cars.

I gave my window sticker and build sheet to the German buyer of my '89 IROC 1LE back when I sold it in 1992. It was a 5.7 Auto. My IROC 1LE did have a stereo, power windows, power locks, t-tops, and cloth interior.

I did not have A/C (and I don't recall being allowed to order it), and I also ordered it stripe delete. For the most part, you could get the usual IROC stuff, with some exceptions like A/C and fog lights.

I was ordering from Germany at an AAFES (Army/Air Force Exchange Service) dealership. They had never heard of the 1LE, and it was a painful exercise trying to get it built using a dealer that didn't know anything about it, working from another country at that.

But that thing was awesome on the autobahn, once I switched to underdrive alternator pullies to keep from burning up the alternators twice a year :-)
