I don't think there is anybody out there keeping track of every single VIN for every single thirdgen in existance, and if there is I feel very sorry for them. But hey, thanks for the update anyway.

you've got way to much time on your hands if you're trying to keep track of every single 3rdgen ever made. but good luck to you in your search....

I personally am not keeping track of them, but look through the archives and you'll see people who DO keep track of them....just helping out.

You got the rpo sheet and left the valuable items like the GFX etc. My local scrap yard goes through 15 third gens a month, most last a week so I strip them as much as I can and I have never removed the rpo sheet
Thanks for the post but I see no reason for it

Wow, apparantly I did have too much time on my hands. I started collecting VIN's on third-gen Z28's and IROC's in Nov 1986 and did this through 2003.
My efforts were concentrated on '82-'87 Z28's and IROC's and have information on about 400 cars. Then 1992 came and collected info on about 500 cars. All were here in the Atlanta area. Pics were taken whenever possible. I have filled six photo albums and have enough pics to fill up about four more. Work in progress. One day I'd like to publish my work in print.

i know "3rdgenparts" always makes a post when he crushes a car. usualy he titles them "for the record".
also i say go for it. about 3 months ago there was a guy on here looking for his thirdgen he had back in highschool.. he searched for the vin on TGO and found... nothing.. but his imposable search continues. had somone crushed the car and made a "for the record" post his search would be over and he would know exactly what happened to the car.
i encourage everyone who scrapes a car to post up. now recording vins from the boneyard is a bit much... but thanks for the effort.

Yea, Tracking down, locating or even hanging on to that
High School car is a treasure all in itself.
Thats a very good point!! Even tho Im barely 21, I still
have my 89 GTA that I bought december of my Junior Year!
If I happen to sell it, Id like to know where it went and
if it got destoyed 10 years down the road ..
This is the car I plan on doing a 100% resto too, because
it was my childhood, and will always be!!

NEVER SELL IT!
both of my parrents still get a far away look in there eye when they talk about there old cars they wish they still had. for my mom it was a 70s malabu (red with white vinal top, hit 4 times in one day, once by a cop) for my dad.. about 12.
i always had crappy cars in highschool (the kind that do not produce fond memories), got my first fbody the summer after graduation (2002). i sold her once after i got my GTA, but about two months later got her back (long story). i am not making that mistake again. i figure i will keep it until one of two things happen:
1. i have enough dough for TWO projects, then the v6 will go in favor of somthing less economical.
2. alternative fuel technology will progress to the point where conversion engines are being produced, and i will make it into the ultimate economy machine....

People really collect this info? I'd have suggested that your regional board would've been more appropriate for this topic so others in your area knew about them and could go pick them over, but... ok.
I search yards and post good findings on the SoCal board for shopping reasons. If I kept records of thirdgens in yards in the San Fernando Valley, I'd have an album the size of this website!
And TPI, let me join the others with a reinforcing... DON'T ever sell your car! I've owned three, each brand new. And though I only have this one now, it'll be in my Will someday--along with a few more, eventually.
Back to topic, any of you collectors recorded 1G1AP8776DL156901? It was my 1983 Z28 HO, ordered new in spring of '83, stolen from the Cincinnati area in spring of '86, never recovered. Many of these cars have traveled throughout their 'lifetimes,' so no telling where it ended up. I've always wondered...

Do not sell. I look foward to the day 5 years from now when I can buy antique plates for my 1986. And the day when I can do the same for my 1992. I will never sell either car, although the '86 had some rust I just keep getting rid of it. It will have to fall apart. In fact I want a third-thirdgen now that my baby son is leaving for college in August(he's on full athletic scholarship) so the money I saved for college now goes into my cars. It is not stocks and bonds but it sure is fun.
I repeat...Do Not Sell, EVER.

I have quite a list of cars that I have seen, at least, Firebirds that is. Quite a few photo albums of stuff.
I also collect the data plates too. And RPO sheets and build sheets.
And anything else Firebird related, including the real cars!
Don't slam others for doing what they want to do. Just do what you want to do. Collect or not. It's up to each person. And yes, it's history related.

Well, I just bought my '91 Camaro RS off my dealership earlier today (I'm the sales manager for a Western MA Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep store) because its exactly what I wished my old '89 RS was...a 305 5 speed
The car is completely solid, the body is perfect except for the LF corner of the bumper (which is being resprayed in a couple weeks at my body shop), other than struts, shocks and a tune up it needs little mechanically, and the interior is all there and needs about $200 worth of driver's seat work.
Not a bad car for $1,000, eh??
While I let my '89 RS go 4 years because of the lowly 2.8, without a doubt I am keeping this car. Its a proper repaint (the repaint done 2 years ago isn't the best) and leather work away from being a flawless third gen

I have the title of every vehicle I have ever owned. Before you sell it you get a duplicate made for $7 and you keep your original. And Although slightly off topic, I have the Hemi and trans from the Coronet my grandfather bought new in '54..I'm the 2nd owner, (body died).....I keep stuff!!

I've parted 2 '84 Trans Ams so there at least this many less out there. I have no idea who did the flame job to this poor ws-6 model.
I have more pics of them both at work, I'll upload them later when I'm back in the office.
the other one was a white t-top model
both acquired on ebay....

For you record keepers, here's a rare bird to add to your books. Sadly, it rests in a junkyard in the San Fernando Valley, where I found it yesterday, deposited there on 8/12/06. So of the few that were built like this, there's one less on the road:
1985 Trans Am, monochromatic color scheme, standard rear spoiler, aftermarket T-Tops, L69, 5-speed, 3.70 9-Bolt "'SPIN' Resistant" Disc rearend.
VIN: 1G2FW87G2FL618684
And in case any locals wanna grab something off of it, the entire drivetrain is already gone.

glad someone else thinks this way too
had my t/a for over six years now and its never going anywhere, sure i could have picked a cleaner better condition one but it was all original stock factory unmolested cept for paint and transmission,
so what the hell, plus its an 82 one of a kind and i thnk its beautiful and these early ones are sure as hell not getting easier to find, thats for damned sure,
kudos to all out there who think this way, not many do, see far too many get wasted due to ppl going too far with unreachable dreams/ideas and then givng up on it all

I bought my 84 Trans Am in 1998 when I was just 17 and still in high school. I have so many fond memories in that car, that I would NEVER sell it, under NO circumstances and not for ANY amount. Once it's gone, it's usually gone forever.

I love these cars as much or more then the next guy, but I gotta tell you with the massive production numbers and the number of cars that have already been recycled, trying to keep a running tab of VIN numbers that are destroyed is a fools errand.
Carfax will show if a vehical has been issued a salvage title, but it won't reflect when a vehical is crushed. The only sure-fire way of keeping tabs on a vehicles final destination is to never sell it.
I can also tell you that losing a car you're emotionally attached to, doesn't matter all that much with these cars because you can find near mint condition examples for dirt cheap all the time. There's always another one right around the corner. My 83 Coupe got rearended in 1998. In 2005 I finally found another coupe, an 84 2.8 5spd. I put it together with leftoever parts from the 83 and drove it for a summer. When the engine blew I started getting ready for a rebuild and realized that it was a rusted out junker and wasn't worth the investment. I sold the new engine, pulled a few parts and crushed it 90% complete. A week before I finally crushed it an identically equipped Camaro showed up at the tow yard auction, in better condition.
I can appreciate where you guys are coming from, but its just a tad unrealistic.
