I have a 92 Z with the automatic. I always thought that it was a 700r4 but did I read that 92's came with the 4l60? Any help would be great since I keep destroying the 700's

If your tranny is in good shape...simply a shift kit and a corvette servo should be enough to keep her going. I'd recommend the transgo kit, it also comes with a servo. TV adjustment is crucial.
Also depends on how many ponies you're pushing, seeing your sig says you have a 383.
My buddies and I dropped my 350HO in my 87 about 2 years ago. It was originally a 305/700r4 deal.
I would say I'm pushing a lil over 300HP, and my tranny is just now on its last leg....I think the 3/4 clutchpack is toast.
...All in all, a 4l60 is a 700, and a properly running 89+ tranny w/ mild upgrades and a correct TV should be enough to keep you on the road, depending on how wild that 383 of yours is...

as far as i kno the 4L60 and the 700R4 are the same trannies. the main difference that im aware of is that the 4L60 is an electronicly controlled tranny, controlled by a PCM, where as a 700 is not. good tranny for mild power tho. hope that helps.

I knew that the 4l60 was electronic and the 700 wasn't and I thought that the 4l60 started in f-bodies in 93. I would kinda think that if you interchange them that the way they shift would be impaired. I was just curious what was supposed to be in the car

The 4L60 is the same as the 700 except the 4L60 used a electronic speedo sender instead of a cable driven one. They both used TV cables. The 4L60E started in the 4th gens and was fully electronic with no tv cable used.

A 4L60 and a 700R4 are the same tranny. A 4L60E is an electronically controlled version of the same tranny and was introduced around '93 (back from my S-series days, I'd imagine it was the same for the f-bodies).

Just as a little exta info. The 700r4's and the 4l60e's use different filters in the pan. Found that one out myself. As far back at '88 some of the F-bodies had electrically driven speedometers. I've got an 88 Formula and a 91 RS with wires instead of cables. Oh, the RS is a 5 speed but the point if electrical speed sensors were used prior to OBD2 cars

4L60= non ECM cntrolled 700r4
4L60E= ECm control 700r4
E is the ECM control,
its real simple
4l60E came around in different years for different vehicles, as early as 92 and maybe some 91's
it was a phase in over a few years, hit and miss
