Case Studies

The Plant retail and industrial complex
  • Van Nuys, Calif.
Opened in 1947, the Van Nuys Assembly Plant built Chevrolets for over 40 years. GM worked closely with our selected developer and demolition began in 1998. A retail and industrial complex, known as The Plant, resulted on the 68-acre site. The retail portion totals 365,000 square feet and is home to 35 retail stores and restaurants. A 16-screen movie theatre honors the site history with an automotive theme décor. GM continues to operate a car-testing facility on 27-acres next to The Plant.

At the time these cars were made I can't think of a more car oriented place in the West besides Hot August Nights in Reno! There was cruising on Van Nuys Blvd every night of the week! Wed. nights were the big night, you could not even walk down the sidewalk there were so many people! It has since been shut down, like so many great cruise spots. I'll never forget Wed. nights on Van Nuys Blvd, eating a Tommy Burger and cruising! The original Tommy's was still there last time I checked.

I could always eat a Tommy burger even after just eating dinner. They are that yummy!

Forgot to say the custom rods and cars were amazing back then. My faves were the '70 Chevelle 454 4spds and the orange and white first gen Camaros.
