How many 1990 Trans Am GTAs were made for sale to the public?

I ran across a man selling a 1990 Trans Am GTA. It had the 305 V8 with a T-top, automatic transmission, and it was fully loaded. It WAS NOT a "Turbo Trans Am", "Pace Car" or "Anniversary Model"; just a regular GTA.

He says that when he bought it new in 1990, the dealership told him it was "1 of 400" GTAs made and sold to the United States public in 1990.

I think this may be incorrect. I think Pontiac made more GTAs in 1990. I am curious because I have a 1990 myself.

Anyone know how many total GTAs (including all engine, transmission, and equipment configurations) were produced for United States sales to the public in 1990?

Thanks in advance!

Does the 1,447 amount apply to U.S. sales only...OR...U.S. and Canada sales together?

Probably both. I doubt Canada sold 1,007 GTA's in 1990.

I sent my VIN number away to GM Canada a few years ago to get what historical data they had on the car. Here's part of what I got back. If you look at the bottom, you can see there were only 299 1990 GTAs sold in Canada.

PS ... This was 8 years ago.. I don't know if they still do this, or how to get in touch with them. I don't have the address any more.

They still do this ... for Canadian vehicles. They are called GM Vintage Services. They can be reached at 905-644-4060 (eastern time zone)

In 1990 there were 884 GTA's produced for sale in the US. 259 units sold in Canada.

Trans Am GTA Production Figures

These are the official production totals for each individual year, taken directly from Pontiac Motor Division's own confidential production records. The Canadian figures were obtained from General Motors of Canada Limited's Vintage Services division. Not taken into account are any cars produced for export sales; there were GTAs exported to Europe but at this time the exact number cannot be determined. Hopefully the number will be discovered at a later date.

Therefore, since these figures are the best available from offical PMD/GM sources.... these numbers are considered as the cars' official production totals for each year, 1987 through 1992
If it is a true GTA it is one of 289 that got the LB9 -- Engine, 5.0L V8 TPI -- and one of 260 with the CC1 -- Roof Panels, Hatch (Removable) --

RPO figures from THE GTA SOURCE PAGE - THE HOME For The Trans Am GTA Enthusiast....

The 1990 model year was a very short one. It is by far the smallest production year for the thirdgen. GM lost the rights to use the IROC namesake on Dec 31, 1989, so they couldn't produce IROC's after that date (but they could sell what was already produced). And GM had already designed new updated bumpers and ground effects for both the 1991 Firebird and Camaros, so they simply stopped the 90 model year production WAY early and started building 91's. The last build date for the 90 model year is Dec 27, IIRC.

So interestingly enough, no 1990 model year cars were actually produced in 1990. They were produced between Aug-Dec 1989! Hence the extremely low production numbers.

Hmm...perhaps this would be why the build date on the door on my 91 says April 1990. Cool! I was in second grade back then.
