Am I On To Something?...

I have a 1984 Z28 with the L69 HO option. I was reading David Shelby's book "Camaro Performance Handbook" can be viewed here - http://books.google.com/books?id=t1S...VP5bew#PPP1,M1
on page 4, where "1984" starts in the first paragraph under that section, he describes the Berlinetta as having a roof console with a map light, flashlight, and mileage spools. my car has the mileage spools and the map light, but it does not have the flashlight. it does have a black leather pouch that may have held the flashlight...im not sure what the purpose of this pouch is.
he also says it goes by RPO - DK6...where do i find this in my car?...he also says it was rare and adds value...if i am on to something how much value would it add, and exactly how rare is this?
even if my car doesnt have this i am still interested, so any info would be appreciated...thanks

Is that book worth it? I was looking into buying it.
Also, for RPO codes check in your center console, under the lid There should be a sticker with your RPO codes.

The overhead console isn't especially rare. The flashlights always seem to be missing.

THe flashlight is in the OHC behind the pocket before the dome light. there is a clip that holds it in.

I wouldn't expect it to add any value.

That book is older then dirt and most of the aftermarket parts they talk about are long discontinued. How to Tune and Modify Your Camaro, 1982-1998 by Jason Scott is quite a bit newer and more in depth. Of course neither book is going to have nearly as much content as this site/forum.

It does not really add any value, per se. I would think that If I did the 2 cars side by side comparison, both identical, one having the OHC, I would pay $20 more for the one with... I have bought them for $5.00 to $10.00 from the junkyards, E-bay your looking at $50.00... Its not like power windows or cruise to me...

Sunny,

I have the book and it has some very useful information covering all engine types (carb, TBI, TPI). You are close to where I live. Send me a PM if you want me to copy the book. Just send me a few $$ to cover the shipping.

My late build '83(3rd week June)had 2 of the mounting studs intact,1 broken and 1 missing. The holes are in perfect alignment and looked to be punched instead of drilled(hard to really say since the screws had been run thru them)The headliner(it's in need of replacement - big surprise) was cut perfect for it and the harness was there.I'm wondering if the OH console was a late '83 option like the L69 or the original owner of my Z liked it and added it.Does anyone know?I've since added a nice complete console with flashlight.

It wasn't an L69 option as much as it was a Berlinetta option. I'd have to double check but just going out on a limb, I wouldn't consider it unusual in any 82-87 car. Due to the neato-factor, it's not unusual for any of these cars to have the console, because people add them all the time. They're really pretty worthless from a functional standpoint, except they hold a really trashed headliner in place.

Re: Am I On To Something?...

I was using the late intro of the L69 option in comparison of the OH console being available before the '84 model year. The sheetmetal in my '83 is punched/stamped and not drilled for the holes for the post that mount the console. And they do have a more useful maplight.
