GTA Fake or Real

Other than sending the vin to GM on a car and waiting 2 weeks is there another way to find out if a car is a real GTA ? I used to own a GTA some years ago and there was a website where I thought you could enter your vin and find out right away if it was a GTA. I was thinking that this website was Transamgta.com. If a car doesn't have Y84 as an RPO code does this mean it's a fake ? Are there any other RPO codes that are listed on the sticker indicating that a particular firebird is really a GTA ?

Re: GTA Fake or Real

well theres plenty of ways to tell without the rpo sheet which they're not 100% first of GTA badges, second one is gold pontiac lettering on the headlights, third one is gold firebird on tailights instead of normal silver one if u need any more info check out http://www.gtasourcepage.com/ that site has everything u need to know

Re: GTA Fake or Real

I really thought that all the things you named could be altered pretty easy on a stock T/A. What would be the RPO codes that it would have to have to be a GTA ? The car I am questioning doest have the Y84 option code and has been repainted so the emblems are in different places.

No Y84, No GTA. Thats the only way to know for sure... unless the SPID is wrong, your car isnt a GTA.

Ashman.... you'll have much better luck finding the Gunmetal Metallic as they were produced in far, far greater numbers; it was also an exclusive color to the GTA for 1987 and 1988. For 1987, the color code started out as 84 but was later changed to 87; records show that only one code 84 Gunmetal GTA was built.

1987 - 828 (+1)
1988 - 930
1989 - 644
1990 - 82
1991 - 98

The Medium Blue Metallic, on the other hand, was a one-year-only color for 1992. Wheras the numbers of all colors were low for the GTA in '92 because of its limited production, records show that only 15 GTAs were painted this color in 1992.

So good luck searching for that one.... I've seen one in my entire life. Personally, I like the Gunmetal better; it's my favorite GTA color.

Re: GTA Fake or Real

Ok... this guy has shown me (a picture taken with a digital camera) an invoice with the vin # and Y84 option on it... however the RPO codes in the console dont show a Y84 code... He claims GM is notarious for poor documentation on their cars... has anyone ever seen a valid GTA with the Y84 RPO code missing ?

Re: GTA Fake or Real

The RPO codes were always in the car as it left the factory. As time passes a new console, or rear lock box could have been swapped in, but it was there when it left the factory.

Re: GTA Fake or Real

If the VIN on the RPO label matches the VIN on the car, and it has no Y84, then it's not a true GTA.

Re: GTA Fake or Real

You can always send your info to Pontiac Historical Services. They will use the VIN to look up the Invoice, and from that invoice they can post the RPO's. My car barely has anything, its a bare bones GTA (still fully loaded as far as the luxuries go though).
My car invoiced for $20,330! Expensive in 1989!

My non-GTA '89 L98 Trans Am listed for 19.5 which surprised me too.

Re: GTA Fake or Real

In truth a GTA isn't anything more than a TransAm with a 350tpi stock, all the options, and an apperance package. A GTA has stock firebird fenders, so thats probably cheaper than the TA fenders to produce!

There are lots of ways to tell if a "GTA" has all of the GTA stuff. Just search the various threads, I know I've listed all GTA specific stuff before. But in truth its not that hard to clone a GTA. Though its not worth cloning a GTA as they really aren't anything special over a loaded TA or Formula.
