Original Documentation
Just thought I'd share some things I found tonight while looking for some other documentation. I knew I had these, I had just forgotten since they were put away.
I was digging thru my car's documentation and found all kinds of neat stuff. I found the original tags that were mounted in the car when new that explained about the automatic car washes and how they can damage the rims. I also found the insurance renewal cards from 1987 - 1999. I found the original Bose Demo casette in a mint casette holder still in the box. I located a lawsuit form against Rusty Jones for filing bankruptcy in 1988 and leaving the owners of a 5 year protection policy without protection. It also included the original warranty card. It's amazing what the original owner kept. The car went in for service a couple times and she even kept the service tag that gets put on the rear view mirror. BTW, all of this was in the original Chevrolet envelope that the owners manual, casette and tire warranty info was delivered in. Gotta love all the service records and oil change receipts since 1987!
I also looked at the purchase agreement and see that my car was purchased new on August 11, 1987. I guess a 20 year birthday party is coming due

That's awesome! I love documentation. I have the original purchase agreements for my 83, which I found in the glove compartment. Unfortunately it was on carbon paper and the writing has long since faded away.

Yes, It is always fun to find some early documentation for your car
I have a bunch of papers that have been hiding in a filing cabinet since I bought the car in 1982 including
Lifetime rustproofing warranty, the GM warranty policy, some Goodyear time information, the 1983 Recall letter for all CrossFire engine equipped cars for 1982 and early 1983 ( to replace the air cleaner colver to prevetn the car from ingesting water through the air induction hood and the throttle bodies) all the warranty service receipts, the cashier's check I used for the down payment, a copy of the original loan papers ( this had a sheet from the dealer with the option RPO codes on it) the build sheet, 1982 GM Maintenance Schedule (for all GM cars), Dealer New Vehicle Certification for Emission Control Equipment, a receipt from 1992 or so for a heater core replacement, the 1982 Camaro Sale Brochure (sp?) and another booklet entitled "Camaro For '82 An Engineering Profile - From Drawing Board to Reality" with this teaser on the bottom of the front cover... Confidential: For Product Specialist's Use Only with a publicaton date of 1/82. Looks like it was meant to be a new model pre sales borchure for the Dealers.
I am missing the owner's manual (lost when the car was stolen in 1985 - 1986 and the window sticker, whcih I seem to remember was destroyed trying to remove it.
Which I had all the paperwork, but I do have quite a bit.
Scott, it sounds like you have a pretty amazing stash yourself.

I forgot to mention that I have the original invoice, buildsheet and windowsticker also. 82crossfire, I might have an extra, mint condition, 82 brochure that I can set you up with. I'll look.
The cross fire air cleaner cover was a fuel injection version of the 60s cross ram intake. The hood has opening flaps that open under WOT. The top of the air cleaner is open so the filters are exposed. During a rain, a WOT would open the flaps and allow water directly into the air cleaner assembly.

Re: Original Documentation
I recently won the Camaro dealer book section for my '83 Z28(well whole camaro line).I need to scan it and sunbmit for the Tech section.I did get carried away in the bidding for it.I add this to the original owners manual, dealer brochure, factory service manual,Chiltons and Haynes '82-'85 manuals, when the put more info in them. It's cool fo those that have the original tags and documention to your specific car.
On the functional hood for the LU5,I feel, water could still be a problem when the flaps are open if you are using a paper elements.I have K&N's in mine but she never gets driven in the rain. They could have done a better job of routing the water drains off the motor when the flaps are closed.

The recall letter is attached. GM did the soft sell on the problem in the letter. It is my understanding that a number ( I have no idea how many) LU5 engines were destroyed by the water they ingested. My understaning of the problem at the time was that the air cleaner cover would act like a funnel and dump water directly into the throttle body injectors. If the engine drank too much water......

Under the rignt conditions, I agree coolram62 that water injestion could still be a porblem. I have driven the car several times in very heavy rains and not had any problems. But then again I am not driving at WOT that will open the air induction flaps. As long as you avoid the heavy WOT acceleration the flaps will not open.

Re: Original Documentation
My second car was a 1982 Z28 with CFI. It was fully optioned and I bought it in 1986 with 19k miles. The car was in the shop for warranty work more than it was on the road. I had so many problems with the CFI that 1 month after I sold the car, GM sent me a letter stating that they would replace my engine with a new LB9 under full warranty. I wish they would have offered that while I still had the car!!! I bought that car in June of 86 and sold it by March or April of 87. They said that there were clearance issues for oil flow that were being experienced by people living in colder climates that changed to a different weight oil during winter. I believe it to be a water issue more than an oil issue. The car drove the worst during rain.

Re: Original Documentation
Sorry to hear that you have so many difficulties with you CFI car. I have been fortunate to never have any engine problems with the water, etc. It does get somewhat cold here in Kansas during the winter. Don't remember if I put a lighter oil weight 5W30 in the winter or not when I used to do the oil changes myself.
It could be that one of the reasons that I have not seen too many problems is that the Camaro has alsways been my second "fun toy" car, and lived all it's life in the garage when not being driven.
