Have you seen this on eBay?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=170144472576
The seller is advertising the car at 3400 original miles. The buy it now price is set at $34600. I looked at the pictures and sent an email to the seller:
You are kidding right? This car is not a 3400 mile car!! The engine compartment is filthy, the paint looks horrible. This is a 103400 mile car. Your buy it now is seriously unrealistic for a car worth $3400!
They responded back with this:
Dear scottmoyer,
you then must need glasses sir, this is a 3400 original milage car that was driven once a year to burn the carbon.you couldn't find a cleaner engine unless it just came from the factory.

Re: Have you seen this on eBay?
I have a few very low mileage cars, and having collected/traded them for years, there's one truth >> Mileage is NOT an indication of condition. I've seen cars with 100K miles on them in better condition than cars that had 8K miles on them. When I buy one to collect, mileage AND condition (plus complete originality) is what does the trick.
My '85 IROC has 3,800 miles. My '89 TTA has 1,200 miles. My '82 Vette CE has 450 miles on it. They live better lives than many people do :-)

Re: Have you seen this on eBay?
Whats the big deal, your just looking at what 20 years of dust in the engine compartment. look at the rest of the car ..... crack free dash pad, letters on all things like the wiper switch, headlight switch. look at the carpet (of what you can see) hell even looks like it has original tires on it, they sorta look like them gatorbacks of the day.
I say your just seeing a 3,400 mile non garage queen is all.

Re: Have you seen this on eBay?
yeah i seen that the other day. its a nice car and in pretty good shape, but come on there is no way he is gonna get that much for it. and the engine looks a little more dirty than just 20 years of dust.

It'd be nice if one of the dealer/members who has an open carfax account would run the VIN to see what this guy really has. I have to agree with Scott -- the engine bay certainly doesn't look like a 3400 mile car. And if the car DOES have 3.4K, why would ANYONE not keep it covered in a garage.

Re: Have you seen this on eBay?
Yeah, it's pretty grungy! My '86 'Bird is a lot cleaner and I've just turned 81k, but maybe the thing's filthy B'cuz it sat so long....The gaskets must be bone dry from sitting for such long periods of time. Every "Carbon Burn-off"
, musta filled the engine bay with oily smoke and coated it with residue, hence all the fingerprints on the plastic air inlet.
P.S. How do you get carbon build-up from sitting? Maybe idling with old gas? Maybe he meant emptying the varnish tank,
I mean gas tank! between fill-ups.

Re: Have you seen this on eBay?
That car is not the pristine car he says it is. Definitly wasn't babied if the miles are actually that low. Here's my engine after 69,000 miles . . .

All original and never touched-up. Just kept clean and regular maintenance. Nothing has been replaced. His comment about "just from the factory" is a joke. 3400 miles, what happened to that poor thing!!!!
The turn signal lever could have been replaced. This is very common. The wires have a habit of cracking and shorting out at the pivot points after years of use.
The tires don't mean a thing. My car is on it's second set of tires and they are the exact OEM Goodyear GSC's that it had in '89. I bought them 4 years ago off the shelf at my local GM dealer. They are still available today.
The paint is very dull too. Maybe the car has been sitting outside a lot.
At $34,600, even if the mileage was true, even if the condition were pristine, he's gotta get off the Barret Jackson turnip truck!!!! Maybe half that.
And even that might be too much. I mean it's also an LB9 (305 TPI) with an auto. It doesn't even have a 350, or at least the rarer LB9 with the 5-speed.
Give me a break. Good for a laugh though.

That would explain everything. Factory Camaro 4x4's are rare regardless of what generation!!

Re: Have you seen this on eBay?
Another thought. For that price for a nicely option (but not great like a 1LE, etc) she had better be darn near a trailer queen!
I should be able to buy it from the guy and drive it across the street to the car show. At least clean the the darn thing under the hood and get the paint buffed or clayed before having the nerve to even try to ask that amount!
Or maybe that's the factory original dust from when it was delivered to the dealer. The particles might have been analyzed as coming from the Van Nuys factory circa 1987. Then I would understand.

If he gets that, I'll advertise mine!!! I have 4x his mileage, so my car's condition shouldn't be any better than hs right. Oh, and his comment about the engine can't be cleaner unless it came from the factory means what? Didn't they all originally come from the factory. Mine did, so I guess that's why mine is cleaner!

Re: Have you seen this on eBay?
I agree it wouldn't have hurt to clean under the hood and prep her as iroctopless pointed out.I mean if you are selling just a regular car you do that. And a vehicle that's stored needs it even more than one that's driven.
And Scott the underhood of your IROC looks fantastic.I try and keep my vehicles clean underhood and underneath(it makes it's so much easier to service). And TPI makes it so much less cluttered than CFI.

Re: Have you seen this on eBay?
I agree about the milage and condition. I went to N.C. to buy a 14,000 mile 1987 Iroc. I had spoken to the owner 4 times on the phone. I asked about how it was stored,Paint condition, etc. he sent a few dark and the "10 feet away"pics. he said it's a 14,000 mile car what do you think it looks like? He would NOT come down a penny from his $18,000 price.
Well, I broke down and agreed to his price and flew up to N.C. from FL. With a one way airline ticket b/c I thought I would be driving the iroc home.He sent his wife with the car to pick me up he was "to busy to come ". The paint on the hood had flaked off ,the wiring had been eaten by rats, The grey carpet was stained to the point that it would have to be replaced. The door panels were eaten by rats aswell. The engine had oil stains. The rims were curbed and the clear coat peeling. When I told the wife that I would be getting a rental car and going home she couldn't believe I wasn't taking the car. BTW The car Really had only 14,000 miles according to car fax. I bet he still has that IROC. Robin

Having that low of miles on it can actually be alot worse for a car of ththat age. As it was pointed out the seals and gaskets can dry out. But also the oil will eventually run off the cylinder walls and machined mating surfaces and cause corrosion on the engine interior. I was an aircraft engine mechanic for a number of years and we'd alway get these aircraft owners that only put a couple dozen hours on the aircraft a year and you'd see more wear in their engines than guys who were out flying on a more regular basis. It's better to get a vehicle that has been driven so that the parts that are supposed to move have been

I told him that I used the same carrier all the time, and they treated these things like babies. He said, "No, I was planning on driving it. How do you think it would do?" He seemed shocked when I told him that I wouldn't even imagine driving the car 2,000 miles.
One, it's stupid to pay a premium price (which is oftentimes in the neighborhood of 200-250% of normal sale price) for a sub-500 mile car just to turn around and kill the value by putting miles on it.
Two, it's less reliable with that amount of mileage than a regular driven car with 10-15 times the mileage. Like I said to him, imagine you sit your rear in your recliner for 25 years. Then one day you decide to jump up and run a marathon. It doesn't work that way ...

Re: Have you seen this on eBay?
The photos are terrible. Too bright of day to see any contrast. unless the car is covered and out of the wind/sun, there will be dust. If the car is exposed to any colder climates, then humidity and condensation add to the dirt. Low miles does not mean super clean. If you look at the wear areas like the pedals, switches, window, tires, etc., they are probably all like new.
I've seen many cars in show that have cleaner engine bays than my car did brand new.
Mark.

Re: Have you seen this on eBay?
I cant imagine why you would buy a car and not drive it. I dont understand the logic behind that. Hell, when I buy a car I enjoy the hell out of it. I just got a 2002 irebird Formula. Only 490 made that year. I drive it everywhere and have fun doing it. I guess I could park it in my garage and look at it once every month and imagine how fast it is. I could also marry a hot blonde and think the same thing and never ride her also.

scottmoyer, I want to have babies with your car. No, seriously, your car is exactly what mine looked like originally. I guess it got stolen at some point, had the original wheels stolen, but the body panels are all factory, with the factory VIN stickers inside. Instead of going with the Dark Red Met. with Silver Accent, I'm gonna change it up and go with a gold accent. Hope it looks good.

THe 1991 is a 1LE. Appears to be so. I also have it in my registry. I think it sold at auction for $42000 not too long ago.

It's not agreat looking car, but it's not horrible. It's still not a 30,000 dollar car, but let's be reasonable. I don't think the owner cleans it like some of you guys do. I've seen alot worse getting sold for way more than they were worth and people boght those.

Re: Have you seen this on eBay?
I do know that an engine bay can get dirty from just sitting, especially without a cover. I remember one car I owned I had to clean the engine bay every spring becaues there was a slight breeze that would blow under the door and get everything just a little dusty... a real PITA.
As far as $30K cars I know there is an 89 Formula 350 convertible for sale on Auto Trader for some $32K It is the lowest known miles Formula 350 convertible (there are 4 with no reading after 1989)...

Re: Have you seen this on eBay?
There are several people listing their cars on eBay just to see what they will bring in. That's why you see a lot of ridiculous "buy it now" prices. They aren't going to sell them, they just want to see what someone would be willing to pay for it.
I just contacted a guy with a GNX that had the "buy it now" set at something like $110k and a reserve. Of course the car didn't sell so I asked him if he had any serious offers. He said the car is not for sale and left it at that.

Well bidding ended at $10K without the reserve being met.And Scott I didn't pay attention to Camaro being spelled wrong - good catch. It's sad because Ebay gives you the header choice and you would think it could be spelled correct from there. You see it so often get a chuckle then move on I guess

Re: Have you seen this on eBay?
Regardless of what the carfax states, because with older cars they dont keep track of mileage that closely and if the car was 103400, they wouldnt know it because it would read 03400. And if you notice in the carfax report, there is a 10 year gap from 87-97 that doesnt account for mileage or anything. I cant go along with that car being 3400 miles, just from looking at the amount of grease and grim under the hood and looking at the overflow container being very dirty. Even if the car just sat outside and didnt get driven, there wouldnt be that much crap under the hood, i mean how many people have cars that have 50-60-70k miles on their cars and dont detail under the hood and they look better than what this guy is selling. As for the clean dash and white lettering on the light switch and all that other stuff, that stuff is easy to replace with new items, i mean how many of us on here have done that and your interiors look better than new with little things like that. Oh yeah, and that fact that he cant spell "camaro" properly kind of tips you off as well. just my

According to carfax my car has odometer rollback issues. Not so much rollback, as rollover. According to the DMV, I only have 23000 miles! I even tried to tell the dude as he was writing it down that it had rolled over. Didn't even listen to me.
