Firebird Cluster ----> V6 or V8 ???

During a recent visit to a local bone yard I found an 82-83 V6 Firebird. It had the small square reverse lights and a 3-speed automatic. While looking over the car for parts I needed; I found that the cluster in the car didn't appear to be correct.

The car HAD a V6 engine in it and it had a cluster with a 30/60 oil pressure gauge. I know that on every other Camaro or Firebid I've seen the v6 cluster has a 40/80 and the V8 got the 30/60 oil pressure gauge. Here are my questions:

1) Are all 82-84 clusters the same ?? 82-83-84 Camaros each had different gauge designs.

2) Did the V-6 ever get a 30/60 oil pressure gauge ? Specificly speaking about the 82-84 clusters.

3) Do the gauges inside the 82-84 Firebird cluster have the application written on them. I recall that the 86 -> up tachs said V6 or V8 right on them.

4) What are the Yellow and Red lines for the 82-84 Firebird V6 AND V8 Tachometers ??

5) Were all 82-84 Firebird Speedo's 85MPH ?? ( X-cept metric, I have a factory 140KPH )

I realize that after 20 + years someone could have replaced the cluster 10 times over this cars lifespan. I'm pretty sure the oil pressure gauge is a V8 spec. I can't remember what the Yellow/Red lines were on the clusters' tachometer or I would have described them above.

I'm not worried about the 85 style or the 86 and up clusters,.........

Allow me to simplify in the hopes of a response ---->

Did the V-6 ever get a 30/60 oil pressure gauge ?

Re: Firebird Cluster ----> V6 or V8 ???

From what I can tell:
1) Apparently they all used the same Sender unit from 82 -84 14039664
2) The 1982 Gage (Oil & Volt) must have been a single unit was 25025713 and there are no other references gages listed...

Unfortuantely I could not find any more info, my book is from 1992 so some things may have been removed as they are obsolete.

My 82 with V8 LU5 has a 60psi oil pressure gauge. My 83 V8 L69 has an 80psi oil pressure gauge. IIRC the v6 had 60psi oil pressure gauge.

I have NEVER seen a V6 with a 30/60 gauge, and have NEVER seen a V8 with a 40/80. That's why I believe this early thirdgen Firebird has the wrong cluster ( or at least oil/volt ) for that car.

P.S. I know that the same oil pressure gauge was used for the V6 and V8 digital Berlinettas and that the only difference is in the faceplate.

I looked through the pics I have and I could not find an 82 or 83 V6 with a 30/60 oil pressure gauge. I did find some pics of 84 L69 with the 40/80 oil pressure gauge, as well as my 83 L69. The LU5 and LG4’s did have the 30/60 oil pressure gauge.

To answer your questions

1) No, the 82's had white needles, the 83-84's had orange needs. 84 also had a different pattern in the tach for red over rev area.

2) Not that I can tell.

3) Non of the gauges I have taken apart have had any markings on them with application.

4) Red lines are:
82 I4 – 5000 RPM (6000 max reading)
82 V6 – 5000 RPM (6000 max reading)
82 V8 – 5000 RPM (6000 max reading)

83 I4 – 5000 RPM (6000 max reading)
83 V6 – 6000 RPM (8000 max reading)
83 V8 LU5 & LG4 – 5000 RPM (6000 max reading)
83 V8 L69 – 6000 RPM (8000 max reading)

84 I4 – 5000 RPM (6000 max reading)
84 V6 – 6000 RPM (8000 max reading)
84 V8 LG4 – 5000 RPM (6000 max reading)
84 V8 L69 – 6000 RPM (8000 max reading)

5) All 82-84 Speedos were 85mph. it was a federal law at the time.

Re: Firebird Cluster ----> V6 or V8 ???

It might be possible that Originally they did have different gages and for one reason or another a gage was replaced by a "generic" item which was one or the other of the gages...
