This is my first post. I have recently purchased a 1988 IROC with a 305 TPI and 5 speed. I have verified this with all the RPO codes that were found on this site. The car is Original paint and interior, it runs and shifts great and needs very little.
My question is this, the guy I purchased it from said that this car was one of 14 produced in 1988 and was a "Pace Car". He also said it was verified on the internet but couldnt tell me where he found it. I got the car for a good price for what it is that I can verify so Im happy with it. But can anyone tell me if they have any info on the "Pace Car" legend that he told me about?
The pace car for 1988 is listed as a corvette.
Im happy to be back in the world of v-8s and floor shifts. My last Camaro was a 1969 X33 Z28 that I sold in 1985. I know I shoulda held on to it. I have night mares about.
Thanks for your info

Im sure your right, I didnt believe it but its hard to tell some folks they might be wrong. Im proud to own this car, Ive been looking for one like this. Its also a hardtop with no A/C, but has power locks windows mirrors and hatch release. The space saver spare and cannister are still intact along with the jack appears to have never been taken out.

Sounds a lot like mine. I just found out about my spare tire the other day when I was taking out the interior. It looked like it hadn't been touched since it was put in at the factory.
Post up some pics in the member's rides section when you get a chance. It's best to host them offsite like Photobucket and then link them here...
Congrats!

There were several races in 1988, And they would have used a miriod of cars. I am pretty sure for example that they will not offer a Police Pace car like they used in last weeks race in Nevada.
So your car may be a real pace car, that was used to pace a race, or a standby car that never saw action. As there were a lot of races, but only a few races got Pace cars which were slated for production, like the INDY 500 1989 TTA, the 83 Daytona Pace car, the 1982 Camaro Pace cars etc. I do know that the Talledaga 1986 race I think it was that used a Firebird Trans Am, but there was never a pace car package for it in production.
GM made a lot of strange cars, I ran across an RPO for a "special Edition PGA package" today... I think it was for a Buick.

Its not that it is uncommon knowledge or even common knowledge it is more of simply putting the pieces together. I think most people here on the boards lose track or sight of the fact that there were in fact Pace cars out there that GM never made, it does not take away from the fact the cars exist, nor their importance in the whole scheme of things, it is there are fewer of them than say the 1989 TTA pace cars, or the 1983 Daytona and 1982 INDY Camaro. It was that GM decided not to make a big deal of it. Also one thing to consider is that PPG used to make concept cars or specially equiped cars to pace races. They would take a Regular Production car and modify it so that it was significantly different than a regular car. I remember having a Thunderbird Pace car sitting in my shop, I also recal a Renault Wedge of Cheeze sitting in our dock, not 100' from where I sit.
The short of it is that you will have to PROVE that the car is what you want to say that it is. Getting documentation, pictures from the race etc. will go a long way. When you bought the car the guy had some sort of proof, well see if he can help you out, he did it once...

The car was purchased from a car lot, no documenttion of being a pace car was provided. It was just what the guy said, but he couldnt tell me where he found it on the internet. The price was well worth what I paid for it compared to cars of the same type. So Im not worried that I got taken for.
This is a car did spend its first six years in British Columbia. It was then bought to the state of Washington in 1994, this is were Carfax picked it up. Since the car reads the odometer in kilometers this is were carfax lists a odemeter problem. Everything else checked out ok.
One I found out it had been in British Columbia I was concerned about a rust issue. This car is a rust free as the day it was made.............
Thanks for everyones reply

What is really interesting about the car in the picture is that it has 15" wheels...

The Camaro has been used to pull duty at Indy since the late 70s. There is an official Pace Car for each year, but the track had Camaros used as Festival and Parade Duty cars. GM didn't publicize the cars as they were mocked up by a company in Indianapolis. That company ordered a small fleet, had them delivered to a local dealer, decaled them and used them at the track. After the races, the cars were distributed to local dealers to sell and many of them removed the decals just to sell the car.
The fact that this is a hard top car in the late 80s without air makes me think that it would be used in Canada and not in the US as US based cars usually had most options for resale.
You could do a title search to locate the cars history and contact any past owners. One of those owners will probably be the speedway it was used at. Does the car have R7U in the glove box as an RPO? It could also be a Players Challenge car that was never used to race but used to Pace instead.

No R7U on the RPO list in the console.........I have one name of a prvious owner I am trying to locate his number and see if he can shed some light on this subject
