1989 GTA L98 Convertible value?

A Silver 1989 GTA Convertible L98 car just came up for sale in Hawaii for $3500. It is in good shape except for a messed up left front fender. Aren't there only like 130 of those cars out there? Any guess on value? I don't have $3500 free at the moment, or I'd pick it up!

Re: 1989 GTA L98 Convertible value?

Silver wasn't a color for the GTA's, but gunmetal was. Might be worth checking to make sure it's a GTA.

Re: 1989 GTA L98 Convertible value?

That sounds like a sweet deal, I guess ultimately it would depend on the condition.

Re: 1989 GTA L98 Convertible value?

I'll try to get some pics. I used to see it all the time and it looked great. Dunno what happened to the fender. "Silver" was my description, and I am color blind LOL. I checked and they only list 139 L98 TA and GTA conversions, no break down of GTA. I'd about sell my GN to get this car LOL!

Also try and get the last 5 numbers from the VIN, I will be able to tell you what the VIN sequence number is in comparison to the other VINS.

Re: 1989 GTA L98 Convertible value?

Well, now he is asking $9800. He said he's going to try and sell it on here too.

1G2FW218XKL245502 is the VIN

I know it's rare, but I think $9800 is a stretch. He said he'd take any reasonable offer.

Re: 1989 GTA L98 Convertible value?

Reasonable huh? How about $3500? lol. No? Ok.

How many miles are on it? I'm not going to sit here and nitpick the car, but the rear sail panels have been opened up to fit those speakers and it looks like the steering wheel has seen better days. Also looks like the rear center stop light is MIA, that is not going to be an easy thing to get a replacement for. Honestly thats too much IMO, I paid less than that for my car (same animal except I have the cheap factory leather) and mine is in a little better shape, based on the photos. I wonder if that car was originally gunmetal? That color isnt original.

Might want to obscure that VIN, at least the last six digits. Send them to okfoz in PM for his research/verification since he has the ASC order sheets.

Re: 1989 GTA L98 Convertible value?

110K miles, but odo quit 6 months ago. Temp gauge is inop too. I have not gotten in the car yet, he just told me where it was located. He is in the military and wants to sell the car before he leaves in July.

From the owner:
"The VIN indicates that it's # 97 of the 139 made. The car was originally delivered to Gay Hood Pontiac, in Riverside, CA. It was scheduled on 02-13-1989 and was shipped from ASC on 5-30-89. It was originally ordered with a BLACK top, which I can only assume was the ratty one that I had to replace."

I put my VIN up in the B4C thread, should I only leave the last 6 here for the sequence check? LMK.

Re: 1989 GTA L98 Convertible value?

:doh!:
actually I think he is going to try and ship it back to the continental US when he goes to CA. Apparently he can get it shipped for free, I assume because he is part of the Military.

I don't know the miles on the car, but Paint is apparently not original, he stated that to me, I would be interested in some under the hood shots it might disclose the original color.

$9800 is a stretch, I would think with the condition its in $6000 is a more fair price as you really do not know whats under the paint AND there is a dent in the front fender which would require a new fender unless you were willing to deal with bondo... a new fender would be easier to manage IMHO, there are some creases which might make the fix more interesting than what is on the surface.

$3500 was a steel, however considering the rarity of the cars they will be desireable, as they already are becoming...

Re: 1989 GTA L98 Convertible value?

Right, he can ship it to his next base for free. He only gets one car though, it sounds like this is a second car (it's just sitting in the lot at his work)

I think I can read between the lines and see how the price got bumped LOL! He mentioned he was going to try and sell it on a thirdgen page, I assumed here. So I guess he contacted you, got the build sequence, and saw one go for over 10K, then decided to bump it up!

It needs a lot of attention, but is a super rare car. No way I'd pay $6K for it, but I am sure if he gets it back to the mainland and puts it on E-bay or something it'll have some good bidding.

Thanks for the info though, I told him I'd stay in touch and see what it does. I was going to try and sell my B4C to pick it up at $3500, right now I'll hold. I'd have to sell my GN to raise $6K, I'll keep it.

Re: 1989 GTA L98 Convertible value?

Yep, two duals on the driver's side. I know SLP made a kit like that for the 4th gen cars. I never liked it though.

I said I'd help the guy by posting it for sale here too, so I 'll make a new post there soon. It is out of my price range! I know a lot of people would love to have this car in their collection. As stated above he can ship it for free to CA in July, before that shipping is $1000 to west coast, about $2500 to east.

Re: 1989 GTA L98 Convertible value?

I can tell you this,
from the pix it does not look TOO bad, the wheel color is from someone using Semi-Metallic Brake pads (Why I use Ceramic) The muffler is an SLP style, it appears to be identical to my 87, I wonder what other SLP stuff it has...

Re: 1989 GTA L98 Convertible value?

Having seen pics of this car, I *think* it was gunmetal before silver. Look at the emblems and they appear to be gray. It's a hunch, but maybe OKFOZ knows for sure.

It's one of three (3) Gunmetal cars I believe I've found.

Re: 1989 GTA L98 Convertible value?

Someone said it was shipped to California... But so many cars, so long ago, I do not really know.
In 1989 here were the GTA colors, from the dealer order worksheet 1st and 3rd printing are the same:

White, Black, Bright Red, Flame Red Metallic or Medium Gray Metallic.

Silver was not an option for any Firebird other than a lower accent color in 1989.
