Chevrolet 307 Engine?

Never heard of it and was curious. Found a good ad on a Camaro and saw it had a 307, so are they worth keeping in or should I replace it with a 305 or 350?

Its basically a 283 block (larger journals though) with a large journal 327 crankshaft in it and pistons with a reduced compression height. The cam was weak and the heads weaker yet. It does have a better bore/stroke ratio than a 305 does though. Aftermarket parts for the 307 are even rarer than the 305, although you can fit larger diameter valves in a 283/307s bore than a 305s tiny bore.

Re: Chevrolet 307 Engine?

So would you reccomend that staying in the car or if I buy it throwing a spare 305 in?

If you are going to go through the trouble of pulling and replacing the engine, there is no reason to choose a 305 over a 350.

Re: Chevrolet 307 Engine?

Know there a very durable engine. IF its the one they put in 80's Buick sedans, > 250 k miles not impossible

Re: Chevrolet 307 Engine?

Didn't Oldsmobile use the 307 too? I'm thinking the early 80's Olds 88 & 98 used them.

Re: Chevrolet 307 Engine?

The olds 307 is a completely different motor entirely. Strong design(SBO), but weak power. If I was given the choice between a 305 or a 307, I would choose the 307 in a heartbeat. the larger bore and smaller stroke make it a better engine (IMO). I have heard that all 307's wear faster though, due to the lack of nickel in the block. Rebuilds can come as early as 70k.

Cheers!!

Re: Chevrolet 307 Engine?

I woudln't bother replacing a 307 with a 305.. doesn't really make any sense.. if you were going to replace it put something with some ***** in there.. it may in fact be a 305 though.. notice the "iroc" rims..
