Re: 1992 Yellow Formula Production Numbers

I found yet another JY Formula, this one is a Formula LB9/A4 hardtop

http://detroit.en.craigslist.org/ctd/1182930609.html

The car is actually in Port Huron, which is north of Detroit by about 60 or so miles. I went to look at the car here is what I found.

1) Obviously the car has been repainted, it is very evident in the pictures from the Decals being wrong. The color appears to be the original Yellow shade. From the repaint there is a little over spray on the rear hatch interior plastic piece on the passenger side, and some other over spray issues.

2) Although it appears to be really clean in pictures, the RH rear wheel well has a rust hole at the top... If it is not a hole yet it is really close. The bottom of the drivers side door seemed fine, but when you opened the door the front of the door hinge area there is some rust on the door and the hinges. ( I noticed what I did and did not go any further looking underneath etc... )

3) It is a true blue TPI car, I was going to look for SLP equipment and do not remember seeing any, appears to be basically a stock engine.

4) The Odometer did rear just a shy bit over 60,xxx so it is a reasonably lower miles car.

5) He is asking $4500...

6) The interior is honestly pretty decent, no smells jumped out at me, the seats were not torn, the carpet is a little dirty, The ash tray looked pretty good. I did not see any cracks in the dash pad etc... Beyond the little over spray I mentioned it was reasonably nice, about what you would expect from a 17 year old 60K mile car. Also had the original GM floor mats...

Final thoughts: SINCE it was repainted, I have no idea what is under all that paint, it is a little older paint job, it is not fresh, so I think basically what you see may be close to what you are getting. I did not notice any spider-web cracks in the bumpers that jumped out at me... there may be some upon really close inspection, but they looked pretty decent. It is definitely worth fixing up if your interested in the car, but personally I wanted something a little cleaner. Honestly out of all of the JY Formulas out there this one may be rather unique. 3 of the cars I have seen were the LO3/A4, and a few L98/A4 cars, then the LB9/M5 is pretty common. I have never seen another LB9/A4 Formula for 1992 in my recollection... I know they are out there, but this is the first one that sticks out in my head.. Honestly if it was a LB9/M5 Formula I would have been more likely to jump on it...

That is my appraisal, and what I think...

yeah that sounds like the one Bruce has, as you said. Basically a one-of-one, when you add up all its various features. Hardtop, 1LE, LB9, JY, 92 Formula. According to Bruce, it is also VIN 000001 and body #1 for 1992, so it was the first 1992 Firebird ever. I saw it in person, a week or two ago, albeit from a distance. I grabbed a pic which blg0720 posted here. He had some yellow Ronal (Firehawk-style) wheels on it.

A couple of things strictly from memory, so I could be wrong: I think he said that he bought it at Barrett-Jackson in Florida, and that he is building a 383 for it to make it faster. Again, don't quote me on those, but I'm relatively sure. He also told me the price he bought it for, which I won't post here, and that he has turned down much bigger offers. Although I'd be keeping it 100% stock, what a lucky guy he is!

edit: actually I think she grabbed the pic herself! I don't want to give myself undue credit.

There was quite a discussion between these two threads:
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/hist...2-formula.html
and
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/hist...408-bruce.html

The BJ auction shown it sold for 38,500 plus BJ's extra fees.

The yellow rims look pretty neat on the car.

D'oh. I've been away for a while. Thanks for refreshing my memory, JT. Well since the price is well known (although he told me $35,000), he also said that he has turned down offers for $50,000, but might think about $52,000. And on that other thread I was thinking about buying it, strictly for profit. That would've been at least a $15,000 profit. Haha. What a fool I am.

Not a problem. The BJ auction listing on their own website shows it sold for 38,500. But the $35,000 figure was thrown out by someone as well.

So was the title and registration not an issue? And he isn't keeping the car stock as he's swapping out the stock engine?

Re: 1992 Yellow Formula Production Numbers

On the 383 swap, I am not sure, as he and I and blg0720 talked about several cars in a short span of time, so I might be mixing up two cars there. I really hope he does keep it stock! It's so historical. The yellow wheels are a really nice touch IMHO and easily swappable back and forth with OEM's. He did not talk to me at all about the car's title, but I just re-read those threads you posted, and Bruce himself said in the threads that it came with a clear title MSO, so I think he should be able to drive it legally in South Carolina. I should've taken a look to see what plates it had on it, but didn't have the chance.

He also said that he was sort of a freak for yellow, and I told him I was too, showing him a yellow 2005 Ford GT which I had as the wallpaper on my phone. He said "those are bad-a$$" but was not really amused Heck, I have never bought a Ford, but I do have a deep obsession with Ford GT's...especially in yellow...at the risk of straying off-topic.

Re: 1992 Yellow Formula Production Numbers

BJ sold the car for $35k. They have a 10% buyers fee, so that equates to $38,500 for the buyer. The seller also had to pay a 10% fee, so BJ collected $7k on the sale of a $35k vehicle.

Scott, you are correct. Didn't notice that BJ was including the fee in the total.

Actually I would not think that is not the JY 1LE that you have a picture there. It is of a JY 1992 Formula 350 that he purchased a few months ago....

He also has the 1LE Formula, that is untouched...

Re: 1992 Yellow Formula Production Numbers

15 - GTA's (Y83)
24 - Trans AM Convertibles (WS4)
26 - Base Firebird (W/O W68)
30 - Base Firebird Convertibles
31 - FORMULA (W66)
44 - Trans Am's (WS4)
366 - Firebirds (w/W68)
536 - Total

Compnine only shows 24,177 Firebirds in 1992, and other sources report that there was 25,180 Firebirds in 1992. So there may be anywhere between 4% and 8% more out there. But this is a start.

Yes, but typing Jamaica is kind of annoying, especially more than one time,

It depends on the day, but some days I see JY and it takes a second or two to figure out it's referring to them yeller Firebirds. Nothing against yellow cars, it's just the first thing that comes to mind when I see JY.

Like I read...
